Poster: A snowHead

Evening ...
I've got a GoPro and quite fancy buying a pole to stick it on to film myself. I've been shopping around and i've not come across one that get's rave reviews so far, most seam to have flaw (flimsy plastic parts on the XSories U-Shot, no locking nuts supplied with the GoPole ...)
I'm after an extendible pole, no more than 1m in length i'd say. Do you have one and what do you think of it?
Cheers

Kersh, Small quick release tripod mount and some minor drilling and gluing to your ski pole and job done. Both my poles have camera mounts, one quick release and one standard screw that can fit a ball mount so the camera can point back

I'm a skier and I had thought about using my ski pole. I have the GoPro mountain bike mount and initially I was planning to use that on a pole but my poles in resort so can't check the fit. However, my poles are really skinny above the basket/pointy end so i'll have to wrap some insulation tape round one to beef it up, or use the handle end for the bike mount to work. It has to be said, I really don't fancy skiing with the camera on the handle end but the pole no attached to me using the leashes.
Masque, i'd not thought about modifying my poles to provide a more permanent attachment. I'm not quite following what you've done, can you post a picture?
Cheers

There are plenty options but these are cheap and easy, if not perfect.

You're correct a lot of ski poles are too thin at the basket end for the handle bar mount, but other smaller ones exist. Also if you mount it a bit further up the pole it should work and you can still ski with it if needs be.

Kersh, Poles are 1200 miles away. Simply took the grip off, they will twist off in most cases drilled a 1/4" hole and inserted a 1/4-20 UNC bolt from the back, puddled it in with low temp epoxy and slid it back onto the pol (alloys) I used a knurled adjuster to set the length and trimmed the bolt to 1/4" proud above it. you can now mount any camera acces onto that.
Other way ie. with carbon pole is to 1/4" drill down an inch and glue the bolt into the hole, trim the head off and tidy up to the right length
All the action and bullet cams use 1/4-20 UNC mounts for their accessories.

ansta1, they look like a nice little invention and should do the trick. Has to be said geeo, the pole you've bought from ebay looks good too but as a skier, if I have a pole in my hand just for the GoPro, i've then got to stash my ski pole at the same time. I guess i'm better modifying the ski pole.
Masque, cheers ... sounds like your poles are in resort too. I get what you mean now with the UNC bolt. I'll see what I can do with the kit i've got in my apartment .... or just buy one of the mounts ansta1 posted!
Any other ideas welcomed.
Cheers

Kersh, I just did it to act like a monopod and not to need to faff around in pockets all the time. Doesn't effect the balance much but I wouldn't have a heavy fall onto it . . . but then I destroyed a camera in a backpack once so . . .

Well you could just go for the cheap and chearful option like i did if you don't fancy spending a bit of money. Bought a $5 telescopic metal toilet brush when skiing in the states and chopped off the brush part. Used one of the spare mounts that came with the camera and doubly secured it with a fair bit of duct tap
Have to say that it did work a treat and for a fraction of the price

I bought one of these for £5.50- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-Universal-Portable-ultra-mini-Tripod-camera-stand-/261115495460?pt=UK_Tripods_Monopods&hash=item3ccbb24424
I then whipped an old bit of bike inner tube round my ski pole just above the basket (grippy and thick - you could probably find tape that would do the same), attached the mini tripod with the velcro strap and screwed my Drift cam onto it. The mini tripod gives you more options because you can adjust the angle of the shot in any plane. It's sturdy and doesn't wobble. It means its handy for other shots like a low or high follow cam, or for putting yourself at the side of the frame etc. I think you need to buy a GoPro tripod adapter as they don't come with a thread for one, but should still be cheap, and gives you lots of options.

Here's my mate Don using one on a ski pole (he's a boarder but he rides skis for work):

I've used ski poles and they work fine. Sure, you need basic competence with the roll-bar mount or duct tape, or both. Not sure what you mean about "the handle end" - the camera goes on the end you don't hold, obviously. I would not recommend attaching the pole to you; that sounds like a bad idea.
The main problems with ski poles are they're a little bit too short, and they're a little bit heavier than they could be for this use. 1.5m/300g are good targets for those - shorter and you won't fit your self in, heavier and you'll find it hard to handle. Don just carries the camera strapped to the top end of the pole when he's not using it and then straps it on the bottom when he is.

Can you also buy one that that has a tapered handle and is pre greased so it won't hurt so much when I ram one somewhere the sun doesn't shine after I have been cut up again by someone staring at a lens rather than showing respect for other slope users. IMHO they should be banned from the slopes.

Personally, I like the SP stuff. Great quality! Available with or without Wifi Remote holder. Failing that, the GoPole Reach is pretty good. Build quality isn't quite as good as the SP in my opinion but still a really good telescopic pole.

I use the smatree All-aluminum alloy 16"-40" Handheld Pole. I think it is great, you can consider:

Go for one with the button on the stick not the remote control. I sell them for ten quid. Like all selfie sticks, their designed to be light weight so they're not the strongest things in the world....
