Hi,
I am off to Tignes in a few days, and have been looking at the piste maps.
I noticed the Chardonnet lift is marked as "Skilift for advanced skiers"
This might sound like a stupid question, but what does that actually mean?
The lift itself connects to a blue run so seems ok to me.
P.S. Uber excited about hitting the slopes again!

I assume this is one of these things that's likely to vary from "a little more intimidating than a nursery skilift" to "aaaaaaaaAAAaaaarrsmackslidecrunchsnap"?

andharri, it's just a normal poma lift - they put all these daft 'teleski tres difficile' signs up these days but all you have to do is stick seat under your 'nads and let it drag you up.
How hard can it be?

Masque, in that case he must be a maschocist (sp) and derive a perverse gratification from the experience. (nothing wrong with that of course!)
Either way, no reason to avoid it

Skier, I am sure it will be fine.
I learnt to ski at a place with only T-bar lifts and they used to break down a lot leaving you stuck on quite steep gradients sometimes, that was not fun!

I don't think it is a Poma, is it??
It's a new multi-pack chair, if it's the one I'm thinking of. But, it runs out of the nursery area, so it might be to stop beginners getting out of their depth by mistake.

I've come across a drag lift labelled like this before, can't remember where, but the reason for it was because it shot you up the slope like a bat out of hell, scream if you wanna go faster kind of thing. Never been so terrified on a drag life in my life....

Mosha Marc, it is a drag (or was last March). You have to seek it out - sort of drop right off one of those bland pistes on that side of Tignes near the nice looking bit they save for 'stade'
This one certainly gets underway in a manner that could be described as 'brisk' - 0-60 in about 3 seconds - but I'd use the word 'exhilerating' rather than jocrad's 'terrifying'. Smokers are perhaps best advised to wait until the flat(ter) middle section before lighting their pipe
A great fave with afficionados of the genre (me)

red 27, does it drop you off at the top of the "play area" above le Lac?

red 27, gotcha. It empties onto a black, but doesn't seem to run all the time as that black gets a fair bit of sun and so tends to be shut more often than not.

Mosha Marc, I must admit I don't think I ever saw another person on it apart from me. The (lovely) lifty lady seemed pleased / baffled to see me lap it a few times.
It is actually slightly daunting as these things go as they have all these warning signs up and then the start is pretty steep - but those of us who grew up on these things in the 80s know that you just have to CTFO and roll with the punches

Last year while trying to do the 3V escapade I was upset to see a drag lift awaiting me with a "very dificult, experts only" sign and expected the worst for my tired snowboarder legs. However, having been to Scotland recently, and learned on a dry slope tbar, and spent many summers in L2A the thing was lame More like 0-15 rather than 0-60. Only a few corners and slight downhill. Pathetic.

What 'teleski difficile' really only means is 'one person at a time'. i.e. you're not allowed to take kids on it two to a button.
Could be either steepness, or a testicle-pummeling takeoff, or that falling off it means you're stranded off piste in the middle of nowhere, or that it only serves unpisted black runs, etc etc.

Sometimes it means they have a stronger than normal "pull" at the beginning or at some point which might catch you unawares. Or a "banana lift" which goes round a corner..one of those lifted me right off the snow once (I'm 9st!) but if you expect it to be a bit aggressive you'll be fine. Or you will fall off. The only thing which fazes my 17 year old son who is a great skier is a poma lift.....one particular one...!

Mosha Marc, It empties on to the blue run called anenome or its variants commonly called the Palafour. The 6 pack referred to above is the Chaudannes. The Chardonnet has a fairly aggressive start and a steep bit in the middle - the drop off is benign. It is the oldest and 1st ever lift in Tignes and used to close for lunch until the Mayor built his pad just along the road!

One other thing I remember about it, is that if you don't manage to stay on it to the top, the route down doesn't look too appealing to those who only like nice piste. And snowboarders hate it!
