Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

NickyJ, that's the one I linked to above - i thought it looked good. If we can find a few possibilities with a bit of googling, they must be out there!

Great minds think alike Happy. I did check that link wasn't there but hadn't followed other people's links.

I don't know how the OPs friends have been looking but when you are particularly fussy about what you want (and this is coming for some body who can be very fussy Happy) then going DIY is definitely the way to go.

Kelskii, priceless local knowledge! Any claim to ski in/out or close to lifts needs to be very carefully investigated. "This apartment is just 40 yards from a lift to leading to the heart of the ski area" (provided your 6 year old, your granny and your teenage beginner snowboarder survive the steep drag lift with enough energy left to walk the 200 yards to the next lift...) or "the ski bus stops just 50 yards up the road" (but it will already be full and it will take two broad-shouldered men with sharp elbows to persuade the already squashed passengers to budge up and make enough room for your family and the driver will start with a jerk before you've got the kids safely wedged in).

The suggestion of a nice self catering place with a catering service is a good one but apartments or chalets big enough for two families to share in comfort and privacy AND very near a piste aren't too easy to find - I know of several but they don't meet the other requirements.

When people stipulate "non skiing activities" it's always tricky to know what they mean. My non ski activities are mainly reading, chatting to friends and relatives and sometimes playing cards or other games, snow-shoeing and cooking. It doesn't occur to me to go 10 pin bowling in Havant and I can't imagine wanting to do it in a ski resort! And one of the key attractions of a holiday is NOT going shopping other than for the absolute essentials.

pam w, I would normally agree on the shopping front but one year we decide to go to Innsbruck to visit the Christmas market, which had a lovely astmosphere

Just an update - although some people might regard having your own personal taxi ideal, they'd rather be ski-in/out so that makes a lot of Scott Dunn's properties not applicable

Chalet11 above looks ideal and I've passed that one on. What's Obergurgl like at Easter ? (well end March / start April) ?

dsoutar, but see Kelskii's detailed comments - claims of ski in/out need to be carefully questioned!

I wouldn't want to rely on a chalet taxi either, if I could avoid it. Personally I do put a high premium on genuine ski in/out and am prepared not to bother with a lot of other stuff, to get it. I've done walking, and I've done buses - the former is preferable if it's not too far. I don't like hotels either (and don't like Val d'Isere much....) so I sympathize with your friend's list of "wants". But exclusive occupation of a catered chalet, along with snowsure at Easter, does make it difficult.

This is OK if you have sole use of the chalet and can call them up to come get you.

Pain in the back side if you have to arrange a time to meet.

Even in the very flash chalet my son worked in, which had its own 4WD and driver, the driver had to do other stuff - shopping, some transfers, etc. There wasn't a dedicated vehicle and driver sitting there doing nothing just waiting for a call at 11.45 or 14.16 If there is, and if it's only a very short drive, then that would be acceptable!!

dsoutar, not a loaded question (though clearly your mate is...)

He is a good skier, so presumably done a fair bit of sliding.
Has a few quid so presumably is reasonably intelligent (not always a direct link I understand)

So, just out of interest, why doesn't he look for himself? Surely that would be a better option (money it seems is not a major limiting factor) than asking his mate to ask a bunch of people on the internet (a fair few of whom are just going to google "luxury chalet alps" and repost the links they get back) who may or may not have a good suggestion.

BTW - I am not putting down the collective wisdom of the snowHead just a little curious as to the approach being taken. (kind of in a "A friend of my best friend is considering a leaving his wife type question....")

So are you in the fact the person who wants the holiday and just afraid to admit here that you are in fact loaded? Very Happy

Laughing The OP suggests that the loaded skier is not familiar with Europe. I would have no idea where to start in, say, North America. On Snowheads, probably!!

^^ I'm fairly the certain the Scott Dunn drivers come and pick you up whenever you want. Their chalets (in St Anton) are also only a 10/15 min walk up from the Galzigbahn, and you can, kindof, ski to them (down behind the Mooserwirt, I was pretty wasted the only time I did it so can't remember exact details).

I don't think they did say exactly that, it's inferred but they said "wants to ski europe".

Again, not a loaded question and still happy to offer suggestions, was just a bit curious.

Obergurgl's pretty high and skiing at the end of March/early April is usually very good with typical spring conditions. I've skied there at this time for a few years now and have never had a problem, it's a great time to be there. I'd check the location of the chalet though, it's adjacent to the nursery slopes on the valley floor. The main Gaisberg area, where the lifts are is a short distance away up a steepish hill. I learned to ski on those nursery slopes.

Someone say loaded? then Bachelor Gulch, private chalet and lunch at your own private yurt (central heated) and membership of the exclusive Dinning Club for evenings, ultimate US snobbery and they do it so well. Private instructor thrown in, will give you a run at the Birds of Prey. It might also be cheaper than the US couple that spent £5500 a night at Claridge’s for 16 days

I learned to ski on those nursery slopes.

Some blurb from the chalet website:

"Situated right on the piste by the children’s ski school (it wont do our furnishings much good, but you could physically climb out of the window and be on the slope!)...."

This is fine if you've kids in the nursery or are learning to ski or enjoy skiing with toddlers. Otherwise you're yomping up the hill to the Rosskar/Hohe mut lifts.

"...the views are stunning (probably true, fair enough) and The Chalet is right in the hub of village life, just a stone’s throw from the action."

You would need the throwing ability of a World Series baseball pitcher to lob a rock from the chalet into the main Gaisberg area, the height difference is quite substantial.

I had an idle browse earlier (slow day today!) and was amazed how many "luxury" chalets are entirely booked up for the season already. A good time to invest (not from a personal perspective!)?

Verbier. Has the chalets, the challenging stuff, the off piste and is not as lower intermediate unfriendly as some have suggested. My wife had never seen snow in her life and she learned to ski at Verbier. They have a great stand alone beginner area and if you navigate the mountain properly there are a few chairs in the center of the mountain where you can ski mellow blues.
