You should wear one unless the contents of your head are worthless.
So not all boarders.

I'm going to propose that helmets are good...because they protect your head. Counter arguments welcome....

That usually repairs itself after a few days/weeks, a helmet would need replacing...

Recent evidence (Figure 1) suggests that failure to wear a helmet when undertaking extreme sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, can result in severe head trauma....

Which is the most obvious negligence? Failure to wear a helmet, fitting winter tyres or not following copious advice on buying skis before boots or which new car I should buy?

Cynic, ..the most obvious? wearing a winter tyre, fitting helmets to replace summer tyres, and buying a snowboard rather than skis....

its the helmet wearers that cause all the injuries, with the inflated hard hatted perception of invincibilty they career down the slopes at excessive speed crashing into us with beanies....
and more importantly have you considered how much space they take up on the bar or lunchtime table. We used to be able to get 8 people round a 6 person table, well not any more. with all those plastic lids you lucky if you can get a small plate of nuts on the table.
So there is a thought, not only do helmet reduce injuries, they help you lose weight.

Don't be daft, helmet colours won't speed you up.
They might slow you down if they clash with your red skis, mind you.

ah, the flaw in your repost is that the police dont wear helmets anymore, well at least not around these parts, perhaps thats why they are all a bit rotund these days.. in fact off to petition number 10.
all police officers should have an enforced wearing of helmets.

I think it has been proven scientifically that certain colour cars go faster, its do do with the absorbtn or reflection of light waves. So i think the colour of your helmet will have an effect on speed.

Sighs. wearing an helmet has caused serious embarrassment for me.......
started wearing one when mountain biking with my young son. Made him wear a cycle helmet but refused to wear one because i get "hot". Well eventually inevitable happened bike slipped had an argument with a tree (they are very HARD you know). Nothing too serious but a cut on my head decent amount of blood (fortunately carried first aid pack) and ruined top. What was worse had to listen to my son who is not yet 11 say for the rest of the ride if you wore a helmet you would have been fine so finally got a helmet.
As we walked out of said bike shop helmet in hand son looks thoughtfull, "dad you make me wear a helmet sking but you dont because you get "too hot", I mumble yes. Reply comes "didnt we ski around trees last year." I mumble even more softly now "yes" Son then looks at helmet and looks at where I hit my head. then he comes back with the killer blow "who do you think is the better skier now" As he now ski race trains even though its on plastic I have to admit he probably for the first time will be the better skier this year. "So dad its probably you who is most likely to hit a tree when sking"
So I have the sensible response gets in the car slams said car door like the mature adult and says ok i will get a ski helmet. Which I now possess.
You would think at least thats where the embarrassment would stop but unfortunately he just the other day compared our sizes of ski helmet. He comments dad arent our helmets the same size, I hadnt really looked before but sadly it turns out we have similar size heads. He smuggly comments DAD youve got a small head and his helmet would fit me. So i without thinking comment no son it wont its a junior helmet (soon as i say it I regret opening my mouth). This conversation happened at an indoor fridge in front of of two of his mates and their dads. Sooo he dares me to try his helmet on. Thing unfortunately fits me and I have to admit even more comfortably than my own. This year part of his christmas presents is new helmet, same helmet he already has but different graphics, question is as his old helmet isnt that old do i wear suck up the embarrassment and wear it as it genuinely is more comfortable.

On a serious note, i actually think there is an argument for having fatter skis if you wear a helmet.
Because the weight of the helmet will make you sink into the soft snow more,
So there should be rules
Anyone wearing a ski helmet MUST ski on a minimum waist ski of 98mm
Wooly hat with bobble 68-78mm allowed
Street Trendy beanie hat i am afraid it's a snowboard for you lot

Timbobaggins,

robapplegate, im glad to say he has never beaten me at chess and wont for a long long time but to be fair after my mountain bike crash I can see how the helmet can be helpfull. Im still secretly hoping im going to be better than him ski wise on our next holiday, just booked some coaching sessions before we go which son knows nothing about , I always have lessons on holiday and want to carry on improving but I know my days are numbered of having bragging rights with him sking 6 hours or more every week and hes constantly improving.

I've been away from SH for a while, so I've missed much of helmet-gate, but here's a question. Why can't we just wear cycle helmets? I have both a cycle and a ski helmet, are we just being victims of marketing having to have both?

There was a young lad who died a year or two back, somewhere in France I think, after he skied into a tree.
He was wearing a cycling helmet, and I think (from memory admittedly) that the quacks said he'd have survived that particular injury if he'd been wearing the right sort of helmet. I must say, it's something I've wondered myself - maybe that was one of those rare casxes where something penetrated the gaps that tend to exist in a cycling helmet?
Personally, I always wear a (ski) helmet, and in the States a few years ago it saved my life when I got taken out by a boarder and split the helmet right at the base of my skull. But I couldn't care less if everyone else does or doesn't. Their choice. In fact, if a few people got weeded out and the slopes ended up a bit emptier that would be a bit of a bonus.

Joking apart, I have never worn one but I will this season after I saw my son's helmet with a really neat groove through it. He was parked at the edge of a piste when he was hit from behind by someone totally out of control who went straight over him as he was knocked down.
