Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lidl chains = disappointed

Having read on one item here about Lidl snow chains offer starting today - find they only go up to certain sizes and my measly ford focus 155/55R16 appeared to be too large for any of the three sizes they stocked. How disappointing as they looked reasonably good at £19.99.

countryman,

They had 4 sizes when I called earlier today (70, 80, 90 & 100) so it may be worth trying another branch of Lidl.

I wouldn't go cheaper than Pewag Brenta for around 50 GBP.

PS are you sure the 155 is correct 155/55R16 looks very small for a focus, mine has 205 55 R16 in winter. I've seen some with 195's but not smaller.

I was a bit sad too as I wanted 155s for my 107, but they don't go down that little Sad Was really looking forward to getting them too - just need them to get out of our never ever ever snowploughed or salted street, so at 20 squids they were a barg.

That tyre size has got to be wrong, to have a 55 profile tyre only 155mm wide, Smart Car is the only car I can think of that might have tyres anywhere near that sort of sizing.

+1

Mine has 205 55 R16

1.6 TDCI Titanium, but I'm pretty sure they are all more or less this size, apart from ST. Incidentally my 2.0 TDCI Zetec Mondeo was the same size.

Def not 155's as standard on any Focus.

Spyderman, my 107's are 155 65 14 and it is pretty much a coke tin with four wheels [and impossible flipping headlights to change Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad ]. The Focus we have has 205 something somethings....and were a size 90.

edit : the size 90 is what it says on the Thule box, not Lidly ones...but am guessing this is some kind of universal sizing.

tomb,

Is that an ST, with a profile as low as that you need to be careful with the chains coming into contact and scratching the alloys. I'm no expert but I guess the Lidl ones are far more mainstream, I think you would be better buying from a specialist for that size of tyre.

What's your evidence on this? Chains aren't some super high tech nano-geek thing - they are essentially loops of welded steel. Just because Lidl don't have much of a need to generate high margins on the product doesn't mean they aren't fit for the purpose of occasional use. More significantly IME it's cleaning them properly rather than the original brand that makes a difference in longevity.

Bear in mind too, that as it's Lidl, all the kit is likely to be TUV compliant, it certainly is for the motorcycle kit they sell.

The TUV regs for chains can be seen here:

http://tirechain.com/TUV_REGULATIONS.htm

Which includes a section on material selection and on testing.

That size is listed on the size 100 chains that I have got to go on a Zafira and a Galaxy, As others have said they have some quality accreditations listed on them so should be ok for the occassional use I may get out of them.

Obviously there are premium/bling products available too just depends on how much use you think you'll put them too.

Are they "Cartrend Polar" snow chains ?

.... read a few German reports and all say they are cheap but of good quality.

Many snowchains seem to follow the same sizing system:

Always worth checking though before parting with cash.

Just picked up a pair of "size 100". Unfortunately, they only had one set and as the Jaaaaaaag is 4wd, I'd really prefer to have another set. Anyone come across a set of Size 100 in their local lidl that's within reasonable distance of Cambridge?

Brain not in gear - it is 205 not 155 and it was the 205 I went shopping for but they still did not have them but equally the branch I went to did not have the size "100" only the 70, 80 and 90. Will have to try another branch.

I reckon the shipping cost on that weight would be more than they're worth tbh..

If noone nearer has them, then I could pop in on the way past as I go up to, or back from Scotland over the Xmas period, if you can hold them that long?

It's not worth putting them on just to get down a street. Stick winter tyres on your car and just drive out!

Assuming they aren't out of stock at both of my local stores, does anyone know if any of the sizes will fit 245 45 R17s and whether they are likely to damage wheels at all? Tempted to be prepared and not sure I want to shell out for a couple of sets of socks or higher end chains.

Assuming their sizing is the same as others (as suggested) then the chart I have says size 102 or 110 (depending on the number system used). Although, 100 was the 'biggest' I saw in stock, so they may not have them to fit. The only way to know for sure is to check the box in store.

Chains won't damage wheels at all.

Hacel the 100 will fit your 245 45 17s

feef thats not strictly true. The nature of the fit means that parts of the chain will most likely rub against some part of particularly alloy wheels (most chains have some form of warning or other to that effect)

I have run chains on a variety of cars and alloy wheels and never done any substantial damage so continue to do so (as I am later this week to the PSB2012 Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
