Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Buy snowchains between Turin and Serre Chevalier?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We're flying in to Turin then picking up 2 hire cars to drive to Serre Chevalier early Feb.

Does anyone know where we can find snowchains en-route (ideally not too far along the autostrada from Turin) - need a good selection which is likely to include the right size and at a sensible price?

...and what price would you expect to pay?

We're looking to avoid the ridiculous hire charges for chains, and porbably take one or both sets home as we'll probably have spare weight allowance.

Thanks

petem77, there's a supermarket in Oulx just before you start to climb up the Col de Montgenevre, a motorway services with garage and a retail park just past the airport (there's an Ikea) which may have somewhere to buy them. I don't have a clue how much they will be though, sorry.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

petem77, won't the hire people provide them if asked?

Hells Bells:
Thanks. Motorway services + retail park: that's when tavelling from the airport in the direction of France...or the other way (as in "past")?
Lizzard:
Yes, but, from past experience, prices are higher for the weeks hire than the cost new. The best from a car hire company I've found so far is 29Euros + tax, but that wasn't the cheapest car hire so probably wouldn't be hiring them at that price..

most supermarkets in france have them, although if you get there after a dump they can sell out pretty quick. I'd expect to pay probably 100+ euros though.

if i were you i'd get them from the hire company. otherwise you'll end up not buying them until you need them, only to find they've sold out or only have the 200+euro ones left.

eddiethebus, he will have to climb up a mountain pass to reach France from Italy, hence the question about the chains in ITaly. petem77, I think it is the next junction after you leave the airport and join the autostrada towards France. Check out Ikea.it for the location of the Turin store, the retail park is there. There's a couple of motorway services, but I think Oulx may be your best option to find somewhere selling chains. You are unlikely to need them on the autoroute, although I suppose that isn't guaranteed.

petem77, chains are also pretty tyre-specific, so it's unlikely any you buy would fit your car back home. You could always ebay them I suppose. I bought some in France once for about €40. Good enough for a few miles of snowy roads.

I was advised by the rental car company rep at Malpensa last year not to hire chains from them as they're too expensive - and that we could pick some up at a motorway side service station for about the same price or less than 3 days hire.

We ended up not stopping - nor needing chains, but was a bit of a gamble admittedly.
