Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Swiss Glaciers Beat the Retreat

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Sorry my German isn't very good but here's an article about the 'slow death of Swiss glaciers' with some key points translated:

http://www.swissinfo.org/sfr/swissinfo.html?siteSect=511&sid=4627641

According to Martin Funk who works for the Federal Polytechnic (didn't we scrap these in the UK?) in Zurich there isn't a direct connection with last summer's heatwave. Big glaciers like the Aletsch take 80 years to react. Glaciers have lost 50cm per year since 1880 and this has accelerated to 1m per year in the last two decades. The Gries glacier lost 4 meters last year, or 5% of its mass! It seems less snowfall is to blame more than temperatures.... although higher temperature also means less snow and more rain which is a bad thing?

Experts are worried that the remains of the glaciers could fall into the lakes left by melting causing widespread flooding. Accidents of this type in South America have wiped out whole villages.

Have you seen the entry to the Vallee Blanche on the Italian side. The metal steps end in mid air, about 8 feet above the glacier. I was told this caused by the melt during last summers heat wave.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

If it takes 80 years to react, what was going on in the mid 20's?

marc gledhill, How about the start of mass marketing of the Infernal Combustion Engine, the Ford Model T came down to only about $500 a time in 1920 having first been marketed in about 1909 ever since then we have been burning off huge quantities of hydrocarbons

Have you seen the movie Chain Reaction, it was on BBC3 last night. Scientists came up with an efficient way of separating hydrogen from water, thereby producing cheap, clean and unlimited energy. The interests of big business ensured it did not see the light of day.
The world revolves oil and the combustion engine - if it means losing a few glaciers, rising sea levels, global warming, etc., etc. so what.

steveb, when was that meant to happen, in the lunch break after they discovered how to set off cold fusion? Very Happy

Of course prior to the 1900's and the infernal combustion engine we had the Industrial revolution with yet more Hydrocarbons in the form of coal being burnt off, of course what we should be doing is looking at ways of saving the oil etc. for use in producing plastics and other synthetics otherwise we will find that we have the perfect way of producing simple cheap and clean energy but will have no way of putting it into production due to insufficient materials Shocked

Of course a good volcanic eruption can do more harm than 80 years of driving cars around the planet.

Remember the Simpson's episode where the asteroid that's about to destroy the Earth burns up in the polluted atmosphere? Global warming saves the day.

markP pollution wise yes the Volcano will pump up far more debris, however if you look at the records you will note that the largest erruptions have actually caused global cooling, this scientist have speculated is due to high levels of particulate being thrown up into the atmosphere which may continue to circulate for several years

It is indeed a fact that this planet is warming up. But what I can't understand is why people always point to the car and say that is the cause. The temperature of this planet has had very little relation to the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere in the past, so why is it being blamed now.

Even if you accept the greenhouse effect argument there are far bigger polluters than the humble automobile. Transport as a whole only produces about 20% of the countries CO2 emmisions. It's power generation and industry that produces over 70%. But even these emissions aren't that much compared to background levels of CO2.

Of course what the people who criticise the car really mean is they want everybody to give up driving there car and take public transport instead. Except themselves of course as they have a really good reason why they need a car.

oh so the solution to global warming is simple then, drop a nuke down a big volcano, run away very fast and bingo!

Cedric, Nah, live with it. Just buy more t-shirts, a good pair of shades and ski in the higher resorts. Cool

Years ago the Russians gave serious consideration to putting a huge mirror in space, it did not need to be optically perfect so mylar film was being considered, the idea ? To redirect the suns rays to places such as Siberia so they could warm up the areas and get access to the rich mineral wealth under the perma frost, whatabout reversing the idea and putting a huge sunshade up instead ?

D G Orf, Huge weather balloons above the Alps with massive shiny reflective canopies covering an area of 10000 sq miles - I think it's a goer! Guaranteed low temperatures all year round = 12 month skiing seasons!!!

Genuis. Do you reckon I could get funding?

Sorry masopa I'm not sure the ballons will work, I think you need something above the atmosphere, after all clouds prvide lots of shade but can also allow the air to warm, I think you would need something that could either let light through or shut it off gradually, there is after all no point in skiing in darkness, but it might be useful to reduce the sunlight like a pair of sunglasses on very hot days and also those days with lots of clouds to reduce the chances of rain and increase the chance of snow
