Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

We've got a grandma visiting for a good long spell this festive season. I think we'll probably ski *around* Christmas Day, and leave the Noel itself as a day of port-swilling gluttonous porkery.

This'll be the first Christmas I'll be in the UK for since '06, first with family since '07 - really looking forward to a proper Christmas dinner! Cordon Blue (sp?) with the Dutchies became a bit of a Christmas tradition in Saalbach, not the same obviously, but the skiing made up for it.

On the snow every time since the late 70s for me. Nothing to beat it! You can eat turkey any day, but quiet pistes and endless snow make it much more worthwhile.

I have never been in a ski resort over christmas, but at home the day does my head in without some kind of jog or at least a walk. If I was anywhere near resort of course I would go out for ski sometime between presents in the morning and dinner. Just an hour or two to build up appetite! In general my preference I'd for the dinner late- after 3- so would give enough time for skiing

Boredsurfing, my only reason is because we're still renting out the apartment and I can fill my apartment for Christmas and New Year, mid-January is more difficult. However, I will be out there next year.

Christmas in. UK for the first time in about 24 years so going to be quite strange - we started going away to Austria for Christmas the year after my mother died so we did not have to sit and look at her empty chair - three kids in tow together with Grandpa in those days. Once bitten we never looked back and so somehow managed to always scrape enough together to keep going - elder son got married, grandpa died, built our own place in France and we have continued to either be there for Christmas or some years in the States with married son, but never back here till this year after both of the other children got married this year and so its all change for a year.

But we are heading off for a couple of weeks prior to Christmas and then - utter madness -flying back to Geneva on 29th December along with the world and his wife.

I remember our first year away discussing with the children when they wanted to open their presents and they opted for Christmas Eve in the evening as the did not want to waste any skiing time. And we used to pinch ourselves as we sat on ski lifts on Christmas Day as we were not on the kitchen with the sprouts...

Definitely on the piste (and new year's too) every year. Next year I'll be attending a wedding in Cape Town over the festive season, so it will be the beach but I can live with that Happy

At home and on the piste. Ski with the guesties, light lunch at Mamo's cafe in lindarets, then a beer before heading home to get christmas dinner on the go.

Skiing on Christmas day is on my 'bucket list'. Unfortunately it would mean leaving the (non-skiing) wife and daughter behind so easier said than done. Hopefully junior will get a taste for it when she goes on her secondary school ski trip in a few years so then 'er indoors will feel pressure to come along with the majority in the family Smile

I can't get time off work over Christmas so it's boring motorway day for me every year. Once I have retired I shall remedy this... wink

Scarver, you could always find a chocolate-box sort of place, with pool, sledging, and hot chocolate in front of the fire for the two of them.

queen bodecia, do you have to work on Boxing Day?

Hells Bells, not usually no but I do remember one crazy year when I worked both Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Barmy deadline to meet. Basically I get the bank holidays off but zero chance of getting any other days off.

Same with us over last decade - if we aren't skiing on Christmas Day we will be going as soon as which is what we plan this year. Meal & presents on the 24th, 'relaxed' packing and leftovers on 25th and then off next morning Very Happy

Not entirely sure if I will be working late on Christmas Eve, there is a rumour that we may not operate that day as the Consultant wants annual leave Cool As long as someone doesn't go offering the slot to another speciality Toofy Grin

Scarver, I agree with Hells Bells - you can't get much more atmospheric than that! And if you can get them hooked on skiing while you're at it, well, the rest will be history.

Marmotte16/Hells Bells, that's not a bad idea, ta.

Probably too late for this season, but I may have to work in that, starting with leaving some 'chalet porn' brochures lying around the living room with the pages open at the nicest chalets Smile

Like you say, getting them on the first trip is the hardest bit!

blahblahblah, a graphic designer. With deadlines to meet. Basically unable to take time off work during school holidays but not an issue for me as I'd prefer to go on holiday at a quieter time anyway. However, I do find Christmas Day rather boring so I could certainly see the appeal of going skiing rather than watching tedious TV Christmas specials...

I have never spent Christmas away from home. Christmas = family, stockings, dinner, puds, The Queen on the TV, and the Xmas day movie - at home with my house decorated. New Year I couldn't care two hoots about, but Christmas is at home.

Hi guys,

Im new to the site, so firstly hello.

Strangely for me Xmas is our only chance of getting some boarding in this year as Ive started a new job. Now we just need to get somewhere booked. Hence why ive registered.

Thinking of the 3 valleys as been Courchevel and La Tania before.

Anyway Xmas on the slopes for us. hopefully.

We've been skiing at Christmas with our boys, and often friends as well, for years and years. Three years ago we couldn't get away and had to spend the week in England and we all hated it. Why does everyone have to go so mad about it and spend soooo much money and buy and eat soooo much food? rolling eyes But it's magical in the mountains, snowy, white and so pretty, and skiing on Christmas day is just the best (even if I probably won't be able to actually ski this year, at least I'll still be there). snowHead

We're at home for the first time in 6 years this year as OH felt we needed to spend Christmas with his mother - she doesn't want (not can't) come to the Alps. I am dreading, dreading, dreading it. One of the (many) things I love about the alps at Xmas is the lack of excess. We bung up a tatty xmas tree, get each other a small gift, probably have a steak supper and ski all day and generally have a super time If we get through this year without falling out bigtime it'll be a flipping miracle!

Definitely wouldn't choose to ski at New Year as an alternative to Xmas, but delighted that others disagree as it leaves the slopes nice and empty for me......usually!

Had Christmas in the Alps for the last 10 or 12 years I guess. It's the best week of the year for Jane and me to spend some uninterrupted quality time together, which is just blissful. We used to phone home to speak to the parents on the day, now we Skype with them and our godchildren & nieces. We have a traditional Christmas Dinner (well, as traditional as it gets when one of us is vegetarian) and probably eat too much in the way of chocolates and cake, and probably not enough wine with bubbles in it. Stress-free and perfect. But if pictures speak a thousand words, here's my essay on why skiing at Christmas is better than Christmas at home:

rob@rar, That reminds me of the old joke...

One winters day, Fred's neighbour Sam, came up to Fred's door and started
pounding on it with a great deal of anger. Fred came to the door to see a
red faced Sam screaming obscenities.

SAM : That @#$%^&* son of yours has been pi**ing in my snow bank!!!!
FRED: How do you know it was my son?
SAM : He wrote his name in the snow!!!!
FRED: Well... I'll speak to him about it, but I gotta tell you, I'm not sure what you're so fired up about, is it really that bad?
SAM : It's in my daughter's handwriting!!
