Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Salomon Quest boots - anyone purchased them?

Looking at getting some new boots in December.

Salomon Quest are at the top of my list.

Has anyone purchased them and are they any good?

I have a pair and was very happy with them. Fitted me well, super comfy and dry. Have now upgraded to a stiffer boot but still have the Quests and will continue to use them for days where I have to do a lot of walking around.

GLP, are they good for walking in?

I'm talking about half mile walks to the ski lifts and around town, rather than ski touring.

Does that mean you're going to be stuffing them into normal alpine bindings?

Yes, normal bindings.

Whatever someone else thinks about them is irrelevant if they are not best fit for you! Ski boots are crap for walking in regardless of walk mode or not and of course you run the risk of wearing the heels and toes so they will slip in/out bindings eventually.
Sorry if that seems a little terse.

I will be wearing those "cat tracks" things when walking, so as not to wear out the toes and heels.

I have the cat tracks, they are a bit of a faff to get on and off, helps to attatch them and leave them on for a while so they stretch a bit to your boot shape, dunking them in very hot water makes them a bit more pliable too. They don't change the fact that boots are crap to walk in! Very Happy
Try the boots on, if they are the wrong shape for y Very Happy our feet they are no good to you. Boot fit is very personal.

I'd be inclined to look at the Tecnica Cochise line, and indeed I bought a pair of the 120s. The sole blocks are swappable, so you can a) get a set of alpine blocks that will work in alpine bindings, and b) swap em for some new blocks easily if you wear them out. Also the touring sole blocks are dynafit compatible, which is potentially useful. The walk mode is entirely reasonable, and they're reasonably stiff on ski mode.

Alternatively, get a set of Ice Bugs, or similar trail shoes... wear them to the lifts, and swap em out for some decent downhill boots. If you're not going to tour in your boots, this way will be cheaper, better on the down and a hell of a lot more comfy when you're walking Wink

Having been trying on touring boots recently I have to disagree - with the Dynafit Vulcan and Scarpa Maestrale you can ALMOST forget you're in ski boots, the walk modes are pretty incredible!

Also you have to do a metric poo-poo tonne of walking to wear boots out to the point where they don't work with the bindings anymore. A one/two week a year skier will take many years to get to that point.

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

The Quest Max is a completely new boot, and compared to the non Dynafit compatable Competition, is incredible. Quest Max Pro 130 is the one to go for, that's if you know where to find them.

CH2O, 130 stiff for very cold snow?

They appear to have touring pads available to fit them

Weren't the Quest boots the ones that sparked quite a lot of negative feedback for Salomon, after they allegedly failed catastrophically if you used them in 'low-tech' bindings?
snow report
 You know it makes sense.

ChrisWo, yer they are and that's the reason they're not a tech-binding compatible boot this year.

CH20, my local retailers only go up to the 120 Max.

Also Salomons site only lists up to the 120 as well. That is the boot I am planning to buy if I like the fit.

The 130 looks suspicously the same as this, which in the UK is sold as "Quest Max Riders Collab":

This is different boot, wish they hadn't called it quest, rumour has it there are new tech pads for dynafit compatibility, but yet again, you'll have to look hard to find some. Cool

Bikeandsnow,

Yup that's the puppy.

Cynic,

Nah, she's sweet, really nice flex, tried them in a stop that has a boot freezer in it to get a proper flex test, was perfect, the Lange is a wee bit soft for the 130 given range, complements perfectly the Guardian. The 120 Quest Max was a bit mushy, I felt.
