Having watched Ladder 49 last night (darn i hate sad endings), i noted they wore big heavy duty jackets which dont look a million miles removed from a ski jacket. Im assuming as well that such jackets are going to be very hard wearing, very well made and be rather water resistant..... so who makes them and why isnt that level carried over to consumer outwear such as ski/board clothing?

Ian Hopkinson, Keela don't do all the emergency services but yes they do sell a lot to them.
buns, I guess, because in consumerland u need to tempt customers in one at a time which involves directing a lot of expenditure towards branding and marketing. To use the example Ian mentions (because it's the only one I know about), Keela tend to focus on larger sales to organisations, selling dozens or even hundreds of items at a time. However they don't tend to put a lot of effort into creating a strong presence at the more fashionable end of the market. Accordingly their kit comes in really cheap compared to better known brands.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I know this is a loaded question, but is the Keela gear really that much better than a £150 middle of the range ski/board jacket?

A lot of the Kit was made by Gannex. Who were most famous for Supplying Harold Wilson's mac!

buns, well since u asked In the case of the Munro (which is what I wear) it's double sealed, has a snow skirt, 5 or 6 pockets, a tuckaway but very adjustable (wired) hood, it's breathable and has pit zips.
When I bought mine I hadn't found anything else with the features I required for much less than £250. I was a little concerned that, at that price, it might not cut it on the mountain but it came highly recommended by a climber so I took the chance. 3 seasons later I was recommending it to everyone who'd listen so I contacted Keela and sorted out a snowShops deal... ta da!
I confess, I've not worn many other jackets for comparison but I'm under the impression it compares very well with what's out there.
Here are some other snowHeads' opinions on it
