Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Most resorts reported another 20 - 30 cm yesterday (great off piste yesterday afternoon), and another 10 or so cm fell overnight with more snow forecast tomorrow.

This is certainly a bumper season re-snowfall in January, though a few years ago we had 1.5 metres fall in 24 hours (18th Feb) at 600 metres - it caused chaos as there was nowhere for the snow ploughs to push the snow. Weeks afterwards lorries were still ferrying tons of snow way down the valley to clear roads and paths.

Totally amazing conditions at the moment, though the avalanche risk is still high. Cold for most of this week with some snow, then getting milder for a short while.

Empty slopes midweek makes a happy bunny. Powder powder powder Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Heavy snow for most of the day in the Central Pyrenees, with snow down to 600m. Resorts reported 20cm by this morning - but this may have doubled by the end of the day.

Trending milder at the end of the week, but not before another couple of heavy spells of snow.

Ho Ho Ho couple of mates will be arriving in Bareges on Tues, one of them a very very good skier (some 14 seasons in Trois Vallees) and the other mate, who has rented a place for four weeks, will have three of his mates coming out on Tues to Sat, who like their lunches, so probably not much hard core skiing for them next week!

Then me and the Mrs arrive Feb 2 for a week so we'll be a group of four looking for a guide to do stuff be it touring or just finding powder off the lift; whatever we have to do to get to the untracked Toofy Grin

Any guiding recommendations ?

Though the weather is more settled and milder now over the central Pyrenees there are still problems with the risk of avalanche. Teams have been working hard to secure the Cecire secteur of Superbagneres but there are still areas closed. Against one of the key pistes a long deep anti avalanche trench has been excavated during the last few days in an attempt to protect skiers and open the area. Tonight the main road to the resort is closed while explosives are set off to minimise the risk of avalance for those opting to drive up rather than use the telecabine.

Fantastic snow depths and fantastic skiing, and some nice off piste in some of the safer gullies/slopes.

Colder weather coming in again with snow from Friday and Saturday.

The incredible snowfall from January has continued into February with heavy snow falling yesterday and overnight. Resorts of the Central Pyrenees both in Spain and France have reported between 50cm and 60cm of fresh crisp powder since yesterday. High winds and an orange alert for a tempete caused lifts to close, though some were reopened as the winds died down.

An avalanche earlier today closed the access road to Peyresourde, and the whole Cecire secteur of Superbagneres was closed while explosives were used to try and secure the area.

Calm and milder for the next couple of days, with snow returning on Wednesday until the end of the week.

Superbagneres: 190/240
Peyragudes: 160/220
Baqueira Beret: 210/370

Total mayhem due to the amount of snow that fell Friday through to Sunday, with many resorts closed and some main roads shut.

Once we eventually made it to the lifts here in Bareges, only a handful were open and the crowds were massive, we paid a reduced price for the pass (though the day before we skinned up and found at drag lift that we could use) though still ended up skinning up as the lift queue was huge.

Then in the afternoon we hooked up with a Keith Richards look alike "guide" = "old school" instructor, he said he was 62, though we think more like 72, who proceeded to treat us like tourists and kept telling us every two or three minutes all about the area!

This was doing my mates head in and eventually dear Phillipe got the idea when Phil kept ripping past him and that we were not out for a Sunday afternoon stroll, that said he'd seen us skinning up in the morning so he knew we were not adverse to earning our turns!

He found us a couple of nice pitches and lines and also some good trees, as you can see in the vid.

Was an amusing afternoon, think he now knows what we want !

And we've woken to light drizzle in resort this morning as forecast, so might pass on today, some serious snow forecast again in the week, and now we know where to go !

Pressing issue!!!

I am skiing this weekend in the Pyrenees - flying to Toulouse and was thinking of going to Baqueira because I know that its the biggest and perhaps most reliable and at least the top has the most snow base. As with pretty much anyone i guess - i just want a weekend of powder and thought Baqueira would be the best bet.

Can anyone prove me wrong??

Big thanks.

simonablake, Baqueira is a favourite of mine. 2hrs from Toulouse by car and an easy drive. Plenty of off piste.

simonablake, there's so much snow everywhere - especially on the north side of the Pyrenees - that we don't know what to do with it! So snow cover isn't going to help you make your decision wink.

I never imagined I'd complain about it snowing, but it's non-stop at the moment and the sunny spells are few and far between. You should decide based on the weather forecast. Check out this one which is usually pretty accurate.

Also, if the weather really is bad, Baqueira seems like an expensive option compared to French resorts (although well worth it when the sun's out). Of course, if you're interested in the valley life as well as the skiing then that's a different story and the Val d'Aran is great.

Another bonkers day, we skinned up from the village (Bareges), didn't stop snowing, trees and trees, powder that just got deeper as the day went on, have probably the best vid ever, but have been having problems uploading Sad

Amusing at lunchtime walked into the restaurant, still all hooded and goggled up and someone speaks to me, asking "are you WeatherCam" !

It was Flowa who somehow recognised my outfit from the video !

Mike Pow, don't worry we were thinking exactly the same considering we were with a guide (supposedly) !

Today so much snow resort was shut, so on with the skins and we climbed to the top of the old disused funiculaire and skied pow so deep on the piste as we weren't about to go venturing into any open bowls and the like as it was 5 out of 5 day, and when you'll see the vid it's hard to believe that it's a black we're skiing back down.

Vids of yesterday and today now being uploaded, will post them laters Toofy Grin

Bareges look epic in the videos!

I'm looking for advice here:

For this week end, which decent ski place in the eastern part of the Pyrenees is most likely to have its road access and lifts open given the weather forecasts?

My plan is to go to Baqueira, but the resort was mostly closed yesterday because of the strong wind and i'm scared of something similar tomorrow...
I'm loving it on good days and when there is no fresh snow anywhere else, but at the moment, this is clearly not an issue!
I'm just looking for a plan B.
Ah important point, we'll be driving from Catalunia.

FACT: Skiing in the Pyrenees this year is simply amazing !
