I'm taking my son on a week's trip in the new year and wondered where the best place to fly in to reach Lech was? I can get directly to Vienna or Zurich but I'm wondering what the travel time is from either of these. I've also got options to stay either in Lech or St Anton, as we;re going at a quiet time both are reasonable really but I'm wondering with a 9 year old would I be better off for things to do in St Anton? He ski's well enough to enjoy whichever place. Thnaks

Lech and St Anton are in the west of Austria in the Arlberg region.
Zurich is a lot easier for getting to the Arlberg compared to Vienna. The train from Zurich Airport passes through St Anton on it's way to Vienna. There are coach transfers from Zurich to St Anton and possibly Lech (search for The Arlberg Express).
Lech is linked to Zurs by a cable car and by chair lifts back to Zug and Lech (The White Ring). St Anton is more difficult skiing than Lech and St A has fewer pistes.
The apres ski in st Anton is hard core, Lech is probably more refined and quieter.

Can you fly to Innsbruck? It is a nice short transfer certainly to St Anton from there. I have only stayed in St Anton but Lech looked lovely when we skiied over there but it looks like "lovely" prices to go with it.

rggdxb, by train Vienna would be about six or seven hours to Lech. Zurich more like three. The station is in St Anton. You'd need to change to get a coach to Lech for the last part of the journey (included in those travel times). There can be a bit more rowdiness in St Anton, but generally avoidable if you avoid the bars (which presumably you would). A potential big plus for St Anton is the wellness centre which has a great swimming pool. Lech is generally smarter and sleeker. You can of course visit both as well as Zurs for a day trip wherever you are staying in the Arlberg.

For Lech - Langen am Arlberg train station is more suitable, direct bus to Lech-Zurs (about 15-20 minutes drive time).

Thanks for the tips, Zurich is easier for me pricewise as well so good. What about the place for a 9-10 year old boy? I think from what I've read that St Anton is pretty full on, what I'd like is an idea of what else is in Lech for him to do, perhaps a cinema or ice rink, anyone?

There's an indoor ice rink at one of the hotels in the middle of town, forget the name, but no cinema. The sports centre has a small bouldering wall, games room and bowling alley.
St Anton has an outdoor ice rink at the wellness centre, which also houses the swimming pool, and next to the train centre is ArlRock which is the climbing centre that also has a bowling alley.

Train station is actually Langen am Arlberg for Lech - only about 5-10 mins in taxi. If you can afford it, try to stay in Oberlech and as close to the cable car as possible - Hotel Petersboden, Hotel Montana etc - these are located really close to the toboggan run which is fantastic fun and open till 10pm - your son (and you) will love it.

My parents took me to Lech when I was young. I clearly remember the skeleton of a local saint on view in the church. AlsoTyrolian dancing at another hotel - complete with a skit done by local ski teachers who skied down a staircase onto the dance floor. Tthe "English" skier had tiny skis and huge poles and "broke" his leg)
