Poster: A snowHead

Stupid travel insurance banner. Hope they are paying good. Getting in the way of my browsing.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Get a life mate, how do you think the site pays for itself? Snowheads provides a lot of help and advice to it's members for free. The overheads have to be paid somehow and the banner's not exactly overwhelming or difficult to hide. Do you refuse to catch a bus or go on the tube, read a newspaper, watch commercial TV because of the adverts?

The ads on this site are not well done though, they overlap and hide actual content, something I've never seen on any other forum.

stevomcd, you never seen ads over content? You haven't visited many forums then
That's quite deliberate actually.
People pay for those ads to be displayed so they will be displayed on the screen rather than 'ripping off' the advertiser by non-displaying it somewhere it can't be seen ie. off to the right of the screen.
We could take the simplistic approach of limiting the area available for content but that would be restricting to the users.
So the ads are displayed to the right of the content and ONLY over lap the content when the content + the ad is wider than the window you are viewing it in. If it does overlap, you can disappear it with the button.
As you know, many websites, simply limit the width of the content to a nice controlled column in the middle of the window, leaving room for the ads at the side. This is a waste of screen on most people's monitors but a nice easy way of avoiding dealing with the issue of making sure things resize properly on different sized screens.
Your own site, for example takes this approach, having only a fixed width column of content in the middle. On some screens it doesn't all fit and bits disappear irretrievably off to the left. On larger screens it simply wastes a large proportion of the screen available. On my monitor, for example, the useful part of your site takes up barely a third of the screen space. The rest is picture or just blank green border.
SnowHeads, being an open forum, is open to whatever people choose to post on it, so has been designed to be as flexible as possible to the size of that content while still delivering the ads that we are contracted to. What's your excuse?

Maybe on porn sites. No it's just on this playbook i use i think on my laptop it wouldn't be an issue. I go to a lot of forums. On one site we knew the advertiser was garbage it was a joke on the forum but the mods will take the money.

admin, singletrackworld, goneboarding, snowboardclub and a dozen other forums I visit semi-regularly - no ads over content. Tell me one that does?
It makes the forum almost unusable on iPhone in my opinion - that "disappear" button on the ads is too fiddly to click with stubby fingers, plus the resizing is weird when you zoom in/out to read the text.
What screen size are you viewing our site on? Widescreen monitor here and content fills most of the screen. I will freely admit to being an amateur at web design! At least ours works on iOS though...
