Richard_Sideways, Sorry, but if the Ice was fresh water it would displace less, think about it! However grounded Ice is a different matter which is why I said Arctic.

Fresh sea ice (as it this years ice) is salty. The salt is leached out over about a couple of years, this makes the sea under the ice more dense, so it sinks to the sea floor and is replaced by sea water from further south. This is a driving force for oceanic circulation, if only year old ice forms and subsequently melts the ocean currents could be effected. Add to this the effect of glacial ice melting from the inland ice caps adding fresh water to the surface sea layers and it's density will be further reduced.

Dypcdiver, point taken, but...(theres always a but) if the average sea depth of the arctic ocean is 1,000m and sea ice displaces roughly to 10% above the water, 90 below, an observable ice thickness of 100m above the surface equates to 1000m of ice below and the possibility of the ice grounding, altering the total displacement of the ice.
But in the long run, I completely agree that the melting of the northern icecap will have a barely noticable effect of sea level.
