Hi,
looking at next years ski hol, each year, I hire a car and drive from airport
to resort, can anyone tell me a nice resort, doesn't have to be 100s km piste
as this year taking children on there first ski trip, want to really land at airport
then train or short taxi ride to resort, ideally flying into Geneva but open to offers!!!

JasonW, what kind of accommodation - hotel, catered chalet, rent an apartment?
And how short does short have to be? With kids on their first trip it might be more important to have your accommodation close to the ski school meeting place than to the airport. You don't have to walk from the airport in your ski boots, carrying your skis and the kids', and possibly a child as well! Quality of ski school is also vital. And in very small "local style" resorts you are unlikely to find an English-speaking group.
Flaine is reliable and pretty close to Geneva, if not pretty. But watch your location.

The first time we went skiing after having our first daughter we chose Le Grand Bornand. We chose it due to short transfer from Geneva and accessibility to slopes (as we were going with SIL and meeting up at lunch times and swapping over with lookin after our one yr old) and good prices on 3 bed apartments.
We had a good time and it all worked out nicely.
The other place to consider searching around is Innsbruck Selva, Obergurgl, Solden, and St Anton are all relatively short transfers from there.

There are any number of family-friendly resorts within 90 mins of Salzburg Airport. All will have accommodation close to the slopes and with English-speaking lessons for the children. Transfer by hire-car, shared transfer/shuttle or taxi. Details on the Salzburg Airport website. Bad Gastein and Zell am See (amongst others) have railway stations, although you'll need a taxi or trolleybus from the airport to the main station in Salzburg. My suggestions: Saalbach, Maria Alm, Leogang, Zell am See, Flachau, Wagrain.

JasonW, The shortest of Transfers must be Aime rail station to La Plagne or Bourg St Maurice rail station to Les Arcs. Best arrive by Eurostar from London.

JasonW, Salzburg is a good option, I went on a solo trip in Late Nov 2006 flew in to Salzburg and then took airport bus to main train station in Salzburg, then train to Zell am See, there were a number of stops on the way - cant really remember then, but the Austrian railway website provides good info. I took a taxi to Kaprun where I had managed to get a single room. Bus and train took about 2.5 hours.
Would also recommend any of the main Grand Massive resorts, Les Carroz, Flaine, Samoen or Morrillion, all just over an hour by taxi from Geneva, possible train to Cluses, and taxi from there to one of the resorts, all have easy access to slopes, Flaine in particular as its traffic free and has good begineer slopes. Having said all that you may get a better deal from a T/O to a self cater unit

Though you do then have a (circa 20 minute) bus ride to the slopes (presumably at Axamer Lizum) and back everyday.

Newish (2-3 years old) gondola out of Götzens to the small Mutteralm area, ok for novices. It was also bargain late deal.
Edit Muttereralm

JasonW, what time of year are you going?
think hard about location. It might be worth driving for a further 30 minutes, twice, than having to catch a bus and/or a lift to get to where the ski school meets, and being too far to make it practical to have a cheap, quiet, lunch in your apartment or take kids in for a rest and warm up.
Even a couple of hundred yards walk is quite an effort with a tired child who can't, or won't, carry his own equipment, when you're all in ski boots. And getting them on and off a crowded bus is no fun, either.
If you are not right by the ski school meeting place then it's worth looking (as you'll have a car) at somewhere where you can take the car and park near the slopes.

I'd have said the obvious option was Morzine/ Avoriaz. Both are in the pds and both can be reached in a cab from Geneva in around 1hour.

Chatel in PdS. 450KM of skiing. You can book an apartment in the town for peanuts. I booked a huge 3 bedroom apartment with 9 beds, a lounge, kitchen, two bathrooms etc for 600 euro's for a week. Only takes 1-1.5 hours to drive from geneva.
