Poster: A snowHead

Hi - I've just noticed that the first (Daily Mail) Ski and Snowboard Magazine of the new season is out in the shops (dated October 2012).
I sometimes struggle to distinguish between the different winter-sports magazines. They all seem pretty similar to me. I think there are 4 or 5 general ski and snowboarding magazines, and maybe a couple of ones which are aimed specifically at snowboarding.
Any thoughts on key differences, strengths and weaknesses etc?
Thanks.
Neil Neige

Very interesting to see that all three of the UK ski mags - Daily Mail, Fall Line, & Ski & Board - did their ski testing in Kuhtai, Austria this season.
Won't be buying the Daily Mail again. Read it in about 10 mins.

Mike Pow, Agree on Daily Mail Ski &.... it's only good for a few minutes and very basic info. Almost like TO brochure with articles looking like adds.
Nice to browse for a few minutes, look at the photos but not much substance there.
PS
It was free to pick up in Hemel last time I was there.

What I don't get is that all the ski magazines are full of advertising, advertorials and adverts dressed up as trip reports or such like. So, why do the magazines cost towards a fiver each?

Neil Neige, I think the concensus amongst quite a few Snowheads is that, of the UK based ski magazines, Fall Line is the best. (waits to be shot down in flames... )

All outdated and irrelevant in an internet world. Fall Line is the best along with White Lines for snowboarding but really it's a dead business model I think.

Hardly Suprising as that is where the British Industry ski test was held last March. All the major brands turn up to whore out their wears for the new season. Standard procedure it used to be in Bormio for the 3 years previous.

Timberwolf, not necessarily, but the same approach didn't do John Madjeski (founder of Auto Trader) any financial harm

Used to read Snowboard UK for years before it folded. Switched to Document for about 2 issues before it folded (impeccable timing) then moved to Whitelines. Sure it's fond of it's parkrats and it's ongoing obsession with the Helgason Bros (guys@WL, sure they're good 'oh they're sooo naughty' copy but it's getting a wee bit fanboi, and their plug-n-play Switchback bindings = meh), but there's always a decent dose of big mountain and freeride in every issue, and when the kit-porn bible thumps through the letterbox and flattens the cat, it's basically the first sign on winter.
As for dead format question... I'll browse the magazine; on average, read 80% of the articles, maybe more. But I also subscribe to WL on Facebook and probably follow links to less that 10% of the articles they post there, and don't think i've ever just bowsed the site. Why i'll wade through 6+ pages of written trip report in the magazine but wouldn't give more than 2 or 3 page-downs of attention to a web article is anyones guess... perhaps its just me, old 30something luddite IT bloke.

DMS&S is about as dull a publication as you can get as far as snow sports go, I've never read fall line but may pick one up.
I've been a long time subscriber to Powder since I was about 15.

You know it makes sense.

UK magazines suck balls. Powder and The Ski Journal are both ace despite being America centric. More pages dedicated to stories, editorial and great photography than crappy advertorials.

Many thanks for these comments. Must admit, I was a bit disappointed by the current DMSS but I think I've read some decent ones before. Perhaps they have more of a family focus? It seems the 'Daily Mail' label on it gets smaller every year - looks like it's been removed from the cover completely this season!
I've also enjoyed Fall Line a fair amount. Seems a bit more rugged and adventurous than the others.
One magazine that I have been particularly impressed by is 'Snow'. Just one issue per season but tends to have a wide range of well written and original articles.
Then, there's Ski+Board which I think is affiliated to Ski Club of Great Britain but not entirely sure how that differs from the other magazines (somewhere between DMSS and Fall Line?).
Good point, Richard - I still love to read a magazine e.g. on a long train journey or flight to the Alps. When you're on the internet, there are so many distractions that you're probably never likely to read anything in the same detail as you would a paper copy.
Interesting to hear about the US titles. Will have a look out for those.

Same for me, DMSS very lightweight. Get tempted every time coming up to the season but get so disappointed by the content promise myself never again.
Fall Line is best print magazine IMHO.
For those with iPads the US Ski mag in newstand has a great deal of the season editions for 99cents. US mags tend to be full of adverts but do have some interesting stuff and for 99 cents not much can go wrong?

I want a magazine that purely concentrates on the World Cup Circuit in English.
Results, Interviews, Training techniques, Big glossy pictures, Dry land training, Equipment and technical talk etc, etc, etc.
Won't happen though....not enough interest in this Country.
Something along the lines of this...

Still an SCGB member so I get Snow & Board pop through the door. Pretty boring. Full of adverts - most "stories" are really ads. Also lots of ski "fashion". Frankly apart from a couple of pages its usually as dull as dishwater

Yep the annual ski test, where loads of retailers and media go, ski on a ski for one or two runs and say they have tested it then they copy the manufactures write up for their own website and maybe add a few words of their own.
WHOOPS rant over and prepares to be shot at dawn by other ski retailers, (PS we don't go we do our own)

Fall Line have set their stall out early this winter.
Dropped snowboarding and focussing more on resorts with sidecountry / slackcountry access.
Cover shot - great snow, great snow plow
Surely there was a better pic in that sequence.

That's an odd photo all round, the angle totally robs the scene of any drama thanks to completely removing any sense of steepness until you realise you can see his sluff chasing him. I guess they choose it for the ample negative space.
