Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Volkl Aura review

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have been meaning to put up a review of these skis for a while as there isn't usually many reviews of women's skis on this site.

Volkl Aura 2007 ski but bought new and unskied at end of 2011
177cm, 130-94-113 23.2m radius at 177cm

I wanted to review this ski as I think it is probably the first "all-mountain" ski I have tried that I would be happy actually skiing the whole mountain on. It is fun on piste and a lot easier to turn that the radius suggests, I thought it felt very nimble and easy to ski. It is probably the perfect stiffness for me, soft enough that I can get it to do what ever I want but always felt solid and reliable. It had good hold on icy bits, as good as anything I have tried bar freshly sharpened slalom skis and was fat enough to make off-piste much easier than when I tried skiing with some hired 80mm skis earlier in the year. Previous to this I had been skiing S3s and I missed the rocker on the Auras as I feel it makes manky snow so much easier to ski but newer versions of the ski have rocker. I have also skied the 177cm Mantra and while I enjoyed it I know if I was having a bad day or was skiing somewhere I wasn't entirely happy with I would really have to muscle them about. I owned a pair of 177cm Bridges which I sold for that exact reason as although I can ski fast I always like to be in control.

Hope this review helps some other women looking for skis, I wouldn't hesitate to get them if you ski up to 50-60% on piste as they are really great there, as I said a true all mountain ski. I'm keeping these skis and will ski them as my every day ski and looking for something fatter for fresh snow days, looking for suggestions for that if anyone has any, thinking about 110mm underfoot to keep things sensible Smile

lynseyf, thanks for that. Yours are quite long; do you mind my asking what your vital stats are? My present skis are 163. I'm 9 st 8 lbs, 5' 5". Quite experienced but non-aggressive skier. wink

lynseyf, My wife ski's same ski, but shorter and loves them.

She's just been kitted up with a pair of WD Directors with Marker F10 Tour bindings for powder days, fully rockered. Not ski'd them yet but all ready to go for next season.

pam w, I'm 5'9 so skis are about same height as me. I think they come in 163cm or 170cm and given you already ski 163cm I would try the 170cm, particularly if rockered. I ski 160cm Slalom skis when it is icy and would probably ski about 170cm for general on piste skis. I am a fairly decent skier but not that aggressive either and I have found it difficult to get a ski that was stiff enough for when I wanted to go fast but not too stiff for when I wanted to doddle about inbetween kiddys on a blue or was scared and wanted to make little tight turns because my boyfriend had taken me somewhere that was steeper than I thought Smile

These skis have gotten a lot of love on theskidiva.com but I thought I would stick a review here as there aren't too many reviews of women's skis. I also think a lot of men would love this ski but unfortunately they stopped making it in a 177cm.

Markymark29, I tried the Directors and they are too specialised for what I want, I still want some camber, not sure I really like the feel of skis with no camber. I am sure they are great in powder but realistically I don't ski that that often so looking more for something like the S3s that have decent rocker but still camber underfoot, I really want to try some of the Blizzard skis.

lynseyf, Fair comment, have heard good things about the Blizzards btw, our friends daughter got some all-mountain ones in a spring close-out in St Anton earlier this year. Not sure which model but really rates them, mind you you would if you lived there all year round wouldnt you? Have you thought about the fatty Volkls, some great models, do you need a womens ski, at 5'9" I would have thought you could drive a mens pair with rockers real well?

Just back to the Aura, its sold as the femal Mantra isnt it? I ski Mantras as my everyday ski, buckled one late last season so have a new pair of 11/12 184cm rockered ones to play on for next season, my previous pair were the un-rockered 10/11 version so I'm looking forward to seeing the difference.
