Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Snowing just now again on CairnGorm, wee fresh dusting on the SSC balcony. Glencoe had the most fresh today, though the tows are shut mid-week at Glencoe, the Access Chair is on weather permitting, so tomorrow should be a good day for a wee tour to get some freshies! CairnGorm is open daily for snowsports.

Well the webcam is still working at the moment... Ski down was nice, would have been even nicer without a big unbalanced heavy rucksack full of computer / webcam stuff and tools! So pix from Tuesday:

^Windblown and windpacked fresh across the expansive Main Basin.

^Looking through the Access Chair carriers to the Spring Run and Flypaper.

You can still ski off the Access Chair and the link over to the Poma was still there today. Upper Mountain was simply epic shape for the time of year and most middle runs are still in decent shape too. Big drifts 3ft+ on Mugs Alley.

a good days skiing at Cairngorm yesterday. Frost on the car at 7:30am, so got the funicular at 9:30 hoping it had softened a little. Skiers right of the mountain was shut first thing, and the park was shut until about lunchtime. M1 was being pisted, I skied it about 11am and it was pretty horrible with rock hard cookies on it. Skied it after lunch when it was softer and it was alot nicer. Pick of the morning runs was Coire Cas and Gunbarrell. M1 Poma was the lift of choice, no queues and fastest way up I reckoned...

White Lady was solid all morning, didn't soften til about 1:30pm, when it was then skiing very nicely. The bumps were very flattering, widely spaced and not that big (unfortunately)

Still possible to ski to the bottom via Fiacaill tow line without any walking.

Noel Baxter Retirement Dual Slalom

CairnGorm Mountain Saturday 4th May

Skiers will have the chance to take on two of Scotland’s skiing greats on Sunday 5th May when the Noel Baxter retirement race takes place on the iconic White Lady piste at CairnGorm Mountain.

The race which has been organised to mark his retirement from competitive skiing will be a Giant Slalom, conditions-permitting, and will kick off at 11am with registration in the starting area from 10am.

It is open to anyone who wants to compete and presents a last chance to take on Noel and brother Alain Baxter through the gates. Finlay Mickel will also be there along with other members of the Scottish team.

There will also be a BBQ and music on the mountain, weather permitting.

The weather, well it's one complicated messy mess.... No agreement on timing and detail even at short range from the models. Monday is more promising wind wise across more models and more runs, but it is looking like a suck it and see weekend - which isn't really what we want for a bank holiday weekend, esp one where the weather forecasts promised so much! A ray of hope for Saturday is that the 06z fax chart update for 6am Saturday shows widely spaced diverging isobars over Scotland indicating light winds - there maybe little wind at all first thing on Saturday so it might be a day for being there for first lift and hoping! No agreement on how much or how quickly wind speeds may increase.

Its snowing on the upper mountain slopes at CairnGorm, sleet at the mid-station at present. Around 5cm of snow overnight, dusting in Aviemore, but the warmer air is just slightly further North than expected, whether it will slide South quickly as forecast this afternoon remains to be seen. Summit Run AWS on Aonach Mor indicated 0c for the last few hours, so snow should be falling on the upper mountain there too. It is 4c in Aviemore but 5 at Tulloch Bridge and 6 at the base at Glencoe, it's probably just snowing on the top. Sadly there is a line fault that's stopped the ADSL service on the line that goes up the mountain so no weather data or webcams working today. Sad What we do know is that despite the rain last night and this morning as off lunchtime the Plateau Poma uptrack was still complete. Very Happy

from the cairngorm blog this morning;

Morning Update: MORE fresh snow overnight!
Temperature at the top: -5.0C
Winds: Westerly, 30-40mph.
Visibility: Great overhead conditions at present.
Light snow and strengthening winds are forecast for later on in the day.

Park is sweet! 11 features out in the Ptarmigan. It has been affected by heavy and drifting snow, and as a result opening times may be delayed.

With more fresh snow overnight it has improved the already wonderful conditions that we have on CairnGorm Mountain!

I make it month 7 of this years UK lift served ski season. It started before most of the rest of the alps and looks set to finish later too snowHead snowHead snowHead

Shame about the wind though - looks like we're not going to chance the 600 mile round trip (We've ignored the forecast at our peril before - being blasted off the hill in a 60mph gale isn't too much fun.... Sad ) Fingers crossed for next weekend rolling eyes .

Just back from a trip to Glencoe - webcam looked good this morning and the upper mountain was clear of cloud when I got there but the wind was to high to run the access chair or the cliffy. Just seen on the website Glencoe are calling time on this season. Shame as the cover is still really good on the upper mountain. Going to watch the forecast today and decide if it's worth a trip back to Cairngorm for the rest of the weekend.

Have really enjoyed skiing at Glencoe this year - think I've done about 22days there, 9 or 10 at Glenshee, 4 at Cairngorm (and counting) and 3 at Nevis. Not far off reaching £10/ day value for the area pass Happy and there's still time. Only had three aborted days this season - today and one day in December at Glencoe although the December day the tows ran in the morning I just missed out. One missed day at CG due to storms in December.

Hi Ricklovesthepowder, I was up yesterday at Cairngorm - was lucky enough to have an ad-hoc lesson with Roga. The snow is extremely good. Deep up top right down to below mid-mountain. We skied off the mountain via the Sheiling and only had a 100m walk to the base station. The wind is gusting very strong at the moment on the west side but sheltered on the Cas plus lots of sunshine with snowshowers.
The morning snow is crispy - the White Lady didn't soften until after lunch. With the depth of snow and the thickness of it, there are bumps developing on the gunbarrel and the White Lady has lots of them. With the wind, the uplifts are starting and stopping, but the funicular is fine if you don't mind battling your way along the Traverse!

See Winterhighland website was saying yesterday that (given the forecast/onging thaw) the weekend just gone could be the last one for lift served snowsports on Cairngorm Sad .

I'm assuming that, whether it is or not, there'll still be enough snow for a spot of touring this weekend Puzzled The plan is at least one more slide on Saturday. Or failing Cairngorm, the Glencoe webcams are still showing a lot of snow in the right places.

Today was the day for anyone who was out (I was not), with the 'bird soaring over the gorms. Just glorious. First proper barbie too (proper being defined as BOTH cooking and eating being done outdoors (cooking outdoors and running indoors to eat is a year-round activity)

Still plenty of high-ish touring and gully action to be had. On which note I stumbled across a pretty cool Facebook page - British Backcountry where there's some great reports, new and a bit older - couple of gnarly older boys filling in context on first descents etc. one old boy in particular well known t to Gorm regulars. Great stuff to browse as we wind down - with some pretty scary-ass gully descents including some at 2am and such Shocked

As above, the White Lady was a blast, however the White Lady's not the only show in town:

^Hitting one of 11 rail / box features in the Ptarmigan Terrain Park. There is also a pipe jib, tyre jib and two huge kickers with graded take offs. There are 3 short ride on wide boxes suitable for newcomers to all things park, plus some berms and rollers in the Ciste Bowl.

^The main attraction - the White Lady still wide and deep.

Cooler from tomorrow and it looks as if CairnGorm might dodge most of the rain that's around, some showers later this evening but with South to SE winds the precipitation is breaking up a bit to the South. However the wind is ripping at the Summit, Force 10 just now - but the Ski Area doesn't seem to be getting the full force of it and hopefully it remains that way and we can avoid a full hairdryer treatment just before it gets cooler and calmer again!

Thursday looks promising, FL down onto the tops, so expect crunchy faster spring snow in the Snowsports Area, mainly if not completely dry with Sunny Spells under part cloudy skies and a moderate Southerly to speed things up on the way down around 10-15 gusting 25mph. Looks as if the Central Highlands will escape with lighter winds than most upland areas over the next few days sitting in the middle of a polar trough / low pressure system.

Still fun to be had on the 'Gorm and with cooler temperatures and lighter winds the snow was crunchier and faster, perfect granular spring snow for the most part. Could be some fresh on the upper mountain over the next few days too!

^One of three short flat boxes in the Ptarmigan Terrain Park. 11 rail / boxes, jib features in total, plus 2 large kickers with graded take offs.

^Boarder heads for the still loaded Traverse, good long cruise to the middle via Coire Cas. White Lady still the pick for more advanced riders, or if you do a bit of leg work - the Ciste Gully is superb still.

Yesterday they were also also offering a £5 Cairngorm Mtn. voucher (to be spent anywhere on the mountain) with all lift tickets purchased. Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch wink ? They're trying really hard, which is commendable.

Despite a mixed forecast, it stayed largely dry although it snowed lightly at the top and there were a couple of short, heavy downpours. Still a decent amount of skiing available for mid May, though it's getting thin and may not have long left in a couple of key spots - eg M1 uptrack and middle bit of the Cas piste. Pick of the day was the (closed) Ciste Gully. Lovely spring snow and skiable to just below the boardwalk. The Gunbarrel is still excellent too. It's normally about 5 feet wide with the river raging at this time of year - but still full width and totally flat at the moment.

Some pics below(EDIT: A few more pics now added - couldn't originally get them to work due to technical problems.... rolling eyes):

Mid May and Scotland's not done yet, with cooler temperatures, sunny spells and some snow showers with fairly light winds, if you can get up for a mid-week slide on Wed, Thu or Friday go for it, there's still a selection of green, blue and red terrain on offer with 1300ft of vertical from the top of the area to the mid-station of the Funicular. For Wed the following lifts are scheduled: Funicular, M1 Poma (for White Lady and Coire Cas), Ptarmigan and Ciste T-bars (for Top Basin) and the Polar Express Trainer Tow.

^M1 Poma not going quietly into Summer...

^White Lady: When some of the bumps are bigger than you, they are mountains! snowHead

^The usually infamous Coire Cas Gunbarrel still flat, top two Zig Zags available to avoid the steeper 2/3rds of the Gunbarrel if you wish.

A great day ski touring at Cairngorm yesterday. A real pea souper to start with but we skinned through it and emerged into the sun at the bottom of the Gunbarrel. The car park remained fog bound for most of the day and there were some nice views of the inversion layer below.

The afternoon was scorching, which made hard work of the climb back to the Ptarmigan after a great descent to the Ciste Gully boardwalk on lovely snow. In places, the snow was disappearing quickly in the heat and raging rivers are appearing in the Ptarmigan Bowl. The middle section of the Cas is sadly no more, though it was worth the walk in a couple of places as the upper and lower sections of the run, as well as The Traverse to get to it, were still excellent.

Cairngorm is now closed midweek. Forecast is for things to cool down later in the week - but I reckon it could be touch and go as to whether there will be any lifts spinning for the Bank Holiday weekend. However, with any luck there'll still be a few weeks of skinnable snow yet wink.

Here are a few photos:
