Poster: A snowHead
|
I am on the look out for a new jacket and have narrowed it down to three, as I suffer from Raynauds I have gone for insulated jackets. Mountain Equipment Fang, Arcteryx Fission, Narrona Lofoten goretex pro shell.
What experience does anyone have of these jackets and which one would you recommend? also open to further suggestions.

Don't know the others, but the Norrona is just a shell (not insulated), as the name suggests. Normally this would be a good thing, let's you layer up as much/little as necessary. If you really need warmth, look at down jackets.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

clarky999, Thanks for your input, should have given the Norrona its full title it is with primaloft. I do have a lots of Marino layering but wanted a jacket with either primaloft or other layering, not really wanting a down jacket.

I must say I like the styling of Norrona kit. Not cheap, but good quality as well. See what fits you best with your preferred layers.

Almost everybody does a waterproof primaloft type jacket; your best bet is to go to a big outdoorsy shop and try em all on and see which fits you best. I'd add the Rab Rogue to your shortlist, too, and Patagonia have a nice range of things like the Powder Bowl, Winter Sun and Nano Storm jackets.
Don't feel like having a goretex pro shell outer is a "must have"... it is pretty overspecced for most skiing activities and you can make a substantial saving by going for something with the manufacturer's own brand waterproof material instead. The Mountain Equipment Fitzroy, for example, is less than half the price of the Fang, will work just as well and has a better grade of insulation. Weighs a lot less, too. The North Face Redpoint Optimus is another which is cheaper yet. Both are sold as winter belay jackets for climbers who will use them in some pretty foul conditions, so they're not "second best" by any means.
Personally, I'd skip the waterproof outer too. I've had a couple of hours of rain in my last 30 days of skiing, so I'd just get a decent windproof, water-resistant jacket (eg. Montane Flux) and chuck a lightweight rain shell in my pack or pocket.

I thank you all for your help, I will have to go shopping and try out numerous jackets on the ever extending list. If anyone has other suggestions please come forward.

Ultimate Outdoors in Skipton might be worth a look. They stock a good range of haglofs and norrona jackets, which might suit your requirements. I thought the haglofs ones seemed like good value for the quality, though unfortunately the shape was wrong for me so I didn't buy one in the end.

hi, I have 4 ( hmm, yes I know) different jackets and each has it's purpose - one though - and it's the shell, really isn't warm enough in many conditions, even though it's a top line Columbia, one needs so much underneath, it's only plus is in Spring it is lightweight and a tshirt under works.
For me the one with a sprayskirt under is superwarm (snowboard jacket) and my Down jacket is amazing, in all conditions.
The 4th jacket has a really annoying collar when wearing a helmet, so all are things to consider, however I like the colour of it and it has cuffs which work well with pipe gloves.

Right fit, right colour, pockets where you want them. Not much else matters. It is the layers beneath that keep you warm, and in extremis those little chemical warmers work well.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Mike Pow, Sorry about the delay in posting but have been away. I have looked and these and not in my size, which is large.

You know it makes sense.

Consider Bognor fire and ice range, Salomon makes a down free ski version, which will be warm (not yet in shops). Sun Valley used by French ski schools to keep instructors warm. It all depends what persona you want to portray?
