I booked my car hire in Italy through Holiday Autos, with the supplier of the car been Advantage Italy. Car was to be picked up from Bergamo airport. I paid £80ish
I presented my passport, both parts of drving licence, visa debit card (same one I paid for the car on)
I was asked for my credit card to put the damage deposit on. I didn't have a credit card with me and thefore couldn't get the car.
Hetz offered me a car fopr 380 euro and I eventually got one from Eurocar for 160 euro with limited millage.
Has anyone had a similar problem?
Can I get any money back?

Needs to be a credit-card as they can 'reserve' the funds on a credit card for later claim or release. With a debit card they can't do that.

I've never had it before anywhere else in the world. I even said they could take £1500 from my debit account and then refund it.

It's in the small print when you reserve tho. It's common practice and I've never come across a car-hire place that doesn't need a credit-card for the deposit to be honest.

They won't do it at any desk in Bergamo, I know so just make sure I've got a clear card.
Tesco almost caused a problem when th declined it once even though the card had a zero balance so now I ring them prior to leaving the UK to make sure nothing gets stopped.

Both Eurocar and Hetz offered me cars using just my visa debit card, so it can be done, but at a price

Holdiay Autos are often quite good about refunds if you talk nicely and sensibly to them. Helps to have a decent transaction history with them of course that they can see diasappearing elsewhere if you end up miffed. Starting off by saying it was a total accident you'd forgotten your credit card rather than coming on heavy with the T&Cs might help.
Don't think I've ever travelled without a credit card for such purposes (& checking into hotels) but then I'd rather not have them messing with my debit card as the practical day to day consequences of them getting it wrong can be far worse.

This has been the case for years. The only reason I have a credit card at all is that I used to hire cars to get to/from seasonal jobs in the mid '90s.
