Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

As the title says,
Any recomendations.
Just bought my first pair of skis for this coming season,
I know a determined tea leaf will have em away if they want, but something to stop the " woops, look like mine took em by mistake" brigade.

If you mean while you're stopped for lunch or something, then pair them up with skis others in your party so there's no single pair of skis together, and a tealeaf would have to hunt around the restaurant for the other matching odd pair.

If you're going solo, it's a little more difficult. Something like the Pacsafe retractable lock can be handy
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pacsafe-RetractaSafe-Secure-Retractable-Cable/dp/B0038YW9YA?tag=amz07b-21
but you'd need somewhere on your bindings to pass the cable through and something to attach it to.

That being said, I think I've just worked out a nice, secure locking mechanism for skis.. I'm off to the workshop... I may be some time! Smile

Timbobaggins, I bought one and used it once. Just can't be bothered now.

I just use stickers, use smaller manufacturers skis and make sure the topsheets are battered snowHead

Got an Abus branded retractable lock, which looks identical to the one linked above. OK might stop an accidental pick up of wrong skis, but a hard enough yank would probably cause it to release. Also need to park skis in one of the 4 corners of the ski rack to lock it to anything.

I carry/use mine merely to comply with insurance which only pays out on skis "forcibly removed".

Avoid using restaurants right at the top of a gondola or cable car. Quick escape route for real tealeaves and numpties picking up wrong skis after 8 beers at the end of the day.

Go to any snowboard shop, ask for a board lock, pay the 10-15 euro whatever it is and there you have it.

Put it through the breaks of each ski and round the upright on the ski rack and it's secure.

I got a general purpose retracting cable lock rather than a specialist ski/board one as that seems to double the price. At £1.67 each you can't really complain:

I've never consciously seen a ski lock being used in our area - every now and then I think about it, but CBA. Snowheads stickers probably help. There are some lockable things appearing outside one or two restaurants, but a cheap lock would seem to be better value. Can't grumble at £1.67!

Best defence is probably not to have skis that are too cool - nobody is going to nick my car, either. wink

I bought 2 Samsonite locks in resort after having a pair of trial skis nicked. As soon as I got home I bought a bike cable and a padlock and ebayed the samsonites. Still split skis wherever possible but will always lock them if near the bottom of the mountain or near a road/path. The samsonites were Euro 15 each, the bike cable was £6.

We use something like this: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kryptonite-kryptoflex-7-foot-cable-bike-lock/ plus a big combination padlock. The two things fit quite happily in a jacket pocket, and will go round at least two pairs of skis. Yes, a pair of snips would get through it pretty quickly but it's more of a deterrent than anything. And I can use it on my bike as well.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sterling-825C-2500mm-Double-Multi-Stranded/dp/B004Y4XJEW/ref=pd_cp_sg_2?tag=amz07b-21 would be just as good. And the nice thing is if you have more than one of them, you can hitch them together and thus lock up more pairs of skis / boards (or bikes...).

Timbobaggins, the most important thing to remember when shopping is to check out the size of the widest part of the lock that needs to pass through the skis. I was suprised at how little space there was in the brake mechansim.

Timbobaggins, Loads of ones on ebaaay, I bought 2 Burton ones 2-3 years ago and use them everytime we leave our skis, but only as good as a thief without tin-snips! Stops opportunists/ pish-heads but if someone is serious they'll have them away whatever.

Watch where you leave 'em, avoid busy places near lift stations up yhe montain, outside bars in town centres, and always split them up is my best advice.

just tried to buy a couple (I'm paranoid after reading this thread - and having just bought two new pair of skis) - but the postage cost to the IOM was £13! How heavy are they!!!! Shocked

so just bought similar from another site with free postage (although they were £3.50 each)

Now I've bought them can anyone tell me if they have ever hand any skis go missing? i.e. is it really a problem or am I just being paranoid?

Sack the Juggler,

We've never lost skis, but we have had poles go missing. Usually when the kids dump them in a big pile before their lesson.

Never happened to me, but it has happened to others I know. It's not something of epidemic proportions but if you've got some nice kit, there's no harm in securing it a little, even if it's just so the equally shiny, unsecured kit next to yours is suddenly more attractive

Sack the Juggler, Was sat on a wall at bottom of Tortin in Verbier a few years ago and some big Aussie dude walked over and picked up my skis and headed towards the bubble lift nearby really sharpish, wearing trainers...........wont tell you what happened next but he was pretty embarrassed when he had to give them back in front of 2-300 onlookers, to$$er. Goes on in towns quite a lot, easy money, gangs of chavvy locals from down the valleys I heard. Up the hill quite rare I think but I'm sure some stats will soon be headed our way!!

My Dad had his pair of Salomon X-Wing Tornado Ti's stolen despite the two skis being split up! This happened at the top of a mountain restaurant in Villars, and there was an old crappy pair of rental skis left at the end of the day. Someone clearly took his skis and though sod it about losing the deposit on the rental ones, ended up having to walk down most of the mountain to get home.. Not something I hear about regularly though.
