Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zugspitze glacier at Garmisch

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just been looking at the the webcam at Garmisch below as we're near there in in a few weeks and wondered what the conditions are like. Don't worry, I wasn't expecting any summer skiing there but I was amazed at one of the webcams showing the glacier - is that how small it's become ? Or is the webcam not showing some of it ?

I was looking at the SonnAlpin (view to Zugspitze) webcam on the Zugspitze site.

When does a glacier stop being a glacier and just become a lump of ice that's not quite melted yet?

I remember being there about 10 years ago on a kayaking trip and we went up for a look and it was much bigger. think that was end of May though.

That's what I thought shoogly when I saw that image. It looks from webcam that like it will be melted in about two weeks !

There's something quite sad about seeing these ice-masses disappear. I remember when that one finally melted up in Bolivia a few years ago - a sorry sight !

ArseneWengen, that's all that is left of the glacier. They say that in a few (10?) years it will have gone completely. A few years ago they started covering it up in summer to try and preserve it, but honestly that's a bit like King Canute telling the tide to stop coming in...

It's still a nice skiing area in winter though! The pistes are a bit boring but there is some really great off piste up there.

A small cover has been placed on the glacier this year:

The skiing on the Zugspitze was particularly good with last season's high snowfall.
Also, there is a new chairlift due to come into operation next season, which will give easier access to the more interesting runs on the far side of the ski area, previously only accessible by at least two draglifts.

Thanks a lot nigelg, that's a really interesting little piece from teh Zugspitze website. I like the idea of adding more snow to the glacier when there's tonnes of it around to try to protect the icesheet!

I flew over the top of the Zugspite last summer and was shocked and stunned to see what little of it was left Sad.
In recent years I have always wondered why the first two T bars were always roped off and never in use.... Now I know.
A great shame as I learnt how to ski here 30 years ago Sad(((

AJQ, yup, it hardly merits being called a glacier any more tbh. The skiing is still good up there though Very Happy

Yes the skiing is still good up there, I learnt to Ski in Germany as I lived there for 3 years; started off in Obersdorf, then mainly the Garmisch circuit with excursions to Innsbruck, Stubai and St Anton. I have probably skied Garmisch more than any other resort and it is still one of my favourites and one of Europe's best kept secrets Little Angel
