Hi all,
I just booked for me and 10 mates to fly to Geneva on January 5th 2012 for a week skiing with Action Outdoors.
Normally we go to Cham but this time we want to go somewhere new and my first thought was Tignes.
Anyone know what the conditions are likely to be in early Jan there? What's the place like?
Or is there somewhere else we should go for extensive skiing of all levels?

Hi, Tignes is high, good links across to val d'isere as part of espace killy.
Have been in jan, 2nd and 3rd week but not first. Due to its height should be fine. Val d'isere has more/better nightlife if that is your thing. Not sure how long transfer is, have always done snow train there.

bezthespaniard, nobody can say what snow will be like in early January 2013 but one thing is pretty certain - Tignes will have more snow than most of the alternatives (including Chamonix, apart from the GM) as there is so much skiing up high. "Extensive skiing of all levels?". Definitely. The transfer is longer than Chamonix (most are) but not ridiculous. Will you get a private transfer or hire cars?

A transfer is £75 per person via action outdoors but we have 12 people going.
Anyone know of a good transfer company so we can get a good group rate?
Also, is it easy to ski from where we are staying (Val Claret) all the way over to the other side of the Espace Killy, near Val? Or is it too far?
Any tips are appreciated!

if that's a return price it's an excellent one - doubt you'd beat that.
Any reasonable intermediate skiers should have no trouble getting over to Val D'Isere from anywhere in Tignes, assuming links are open (which is highly likely),

I used snowstar transfers for getting to Val d'Isere last year (from Bourg rather than Geneva) based on other recommendations here and they were excellent in every respect.

The shape of the EK makes it very easy to get around from Val-C. Its not like the 3V where you need to keep an eye on the clock if you are living on one of the extremes. A reasonably fit red run skier can easily do the '4 corners' of the piste map in a day. Even if you do get stuck in Val the 'dullards bus' is only a few euros - could even sneak in a couple of apres beers before leaving.
+1 for snowstar. just NB with a group of 12 most minibuses omly take 8 so watch the final maths.

Why dont you try Portes Du Soleil, 650 km of pistes to suit all types of skier or boarder. Portes du Soleil has always had a great snow record for Jan, and dont worry if you think its low, unlike many high resorts which need a least a meter to cover the rocks, this area only needs 30cm. Plenty of off piste, not quite as good as Tignes or steep as Tignes, but very good. Plenty of tree runs for those days that the clouds come in. Where ever you choose Jan is a fantastic time to go and you will have a great time.

I've got a mate who flew to Geneva and got a transfer bus to Tignes, he said it took around 3 hours.

piperfraz,Late Altibus can do Geneve- lac de Tignes gets in at 11.30pm in about 2 hours 30 with change to mountain minibus (to all bladder holders it does not stop until Bourg)

Yep, that's about it, with good conditions - you could drive it in a little less (but don't recommend following Google Maps and going via the Mont Blanc tunnel and Italy!)
Bad conditions, including the kind of snow you really hope you get on a ski holiday, could add a lot to the time, of course.

Cynic, Unless you get a taxy transfer from Bourg and have Romain Grosjean's brother driving (lies for effect) - he did Bourg Station to the centre of Val in 16 minutes. To quote Kenneth Williams "Nurse the Screens!"

It's worth doing - bit of an adventure and not many people do it - however you do need the 3000 poma to be working - it was shut this season for technical snags. Can't remember what grading the run has - but worth a black IMHO!
