Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Car rentals in Europe: roof boxes?

 Poster: A snowHead

Having strapped several boards to one too many dodgy impromptu contraption: do any of the car rentals provide actual ski boxes?
We're looking to land in München or Zurich, rent something, pick up a fellow snowboarder on the way. The usual magnet-on-roof thingies don't really accommodate 5 boards, and packing inside won't work either. A roomy ski box would solve everything.

Any observations?

Cheers,

have you asked any of them?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Biggest box i've ever encountered that wasn't a custom job could accomodate 4 boards.
Know Avis will hire you a ski/board rack, but don't know about costs and sizes.
Why don't you just rent a van? It'd be cheaper and you can get 3 in the front, 2 in the back on the kit pile - as long as your transfer isn't too long and those in the back don't get car sick.

cantridepete - certainly I asked. Avis and ilk tend to hand out magnetic contrivances that may hold two pairs of skis, but definitely not boards. (We once jury-rigged a pair of these to secure our bags, but it was a very stressful drive.) Sixt once gave us magnetic thingies and a car with a glass roof.

Richard_Sideways - I've assumed vans top be fairly expensive, but I'll admit I haven't hunted for any van deals.

Anyway, in case anyone else hits this page wondering about the same... now that I've spent a couple of years in Switzerland, I can testify that the place is full of box rentals. They're small companies or individuals unaffiliated with car rentals, so opening hours and convenience for fly-ins may be questionable. The search term is "Dachbox miete site:.ch", and prices this year (2013) would seem to range from 5 to 15 CHF per day.
