Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Daily Mail says they there should be speeding fines on the piste

jirac18, You're quite right it's not just about speed. The way speed "patrollers" work in the US is they stand behind a prominent SLOW sign and simply make slow down gestures to anyone coming in a bit hot, they'll also try to collar people dicking around trying tricks off the edge of the piste and into traffic if its heavy. Worst case they radio a colleague further down who can really bust the offender.

Anyone with any sense or skill knows to throw in some turns before the slow sign to avoid aggro. I've had one run-in once when I was on a snowboard for the first time in a year having skied all day and the patroller thought I was shifting too fast, I respectfully disagreed with him given that it was much slower than I'd been on skis and there was no-one in the zone anyway. I'm sure I got pulled because I might not have looked totally fluid and therefore presented a risk if I dialled it up into crowded areas.

I would support action to stop idiots straight lining through beginners areas.

That's fair and specific enough to actually do something about

Agreed but...

Beginer areas tend to be in the village where severl lifts depart meaning the surrounding area is flat. Skiing fast is the only way to get across without having to walk, a suggestion maybe a fenced outer route where relativly fast exit from a piste is available without the danger of scaring the n00bs.

Mind you sometimes I think that folks can over-react - after all, I think anyone that knows me would agree that control is my middle name and I'm hardly renowned for an ability to or want to go fast. Yet in Austria a female instuctor with a string of kids yelled "Mad idiot" at me when I had stopped, thought through and carried a perfectly controlled manoevre to go around her group of kids. So there are definitely times when you just can't win.

Surely, in a thread about speeding fines that should read 'Huhneing it'. Wink

How the hell has this thread got to 2 pages so quickly? "Daily Mail says..." is enough to invalidate any further attention to any subject.

If we get "road-style policing" on the slopes I'm never buying a lift pass again and will ski of piste for the rest of my life, I'm sure many will still go to enjoy 'the freedom of the mountains' though.

narc,
Well you will still have to buy a lift pass unless you use touring gear to ski off piste. You certainly have more freedom off piste to go where you want but to go fast is usually best done on something prepared.
We don't have a high degree of road side policing inthis country so I don't eally know what you are comparing it with but if you think the freedom to enjoy the slopes includes the freedom to ski recklessly through crowde areas of skiers of intederminate abilities I disagree with you.

The quote was road-style rather than road-side, are you seriously saying that our roads now bristling with fixed speed cameras and the occasional cleverly placed mobile one thrown in is not a high degree of policing? And yes if pistes turn into having fixed speed cameras everywhere, fines and employees hiding in bushes with radar guns like our roads have my AT gear will be the only gear that gets used.

In 20 years skiing I have been involved in 0 accidents and have also witnessed maybe 3 non serious collisions and I think out of proportion over-legislation of a mountain environment is unnecessary. Resorts often have ski teams free skiing for training at GS speeds perfectly safely but I'm sure to many brits they are skiing 'too fast'.

narc, Well I agree that the roads are a bit more dangerous than the pistes, and yes I did misread your post and thought you had said road side.
So I would agree that if there are loads of fixed speed cameras all over the place it would be inapropriate and a pain (and unworkable given that there are no number plates on skiers). If there is a notice next to the busiest pistes particularly those used by learners saying that at busy times speed should be restricted and this is enforced I have no problem.

The good news is that the sensible French are likely to take zero interest in the manic ramblings of the Daily Mail.

Indeed. In the alps you can still kill yourself 100m off the chair lift, right or wrong I don't want to see it go the way of the US with gated access, hundreds or warnings, suing ski resorts etc. Even the french resorts already have 'quite zones' for people to ski if they want that.
