I remember Snowtime in Meribel. In particular I remember their snow guarantee which once got us a free holiday.
The guarantee was something like "if less than 15% of the lifts in the Meribel valley are open on 3 or more days in a week we'll give you the same holiday next year free". Of course that would normally be quite difficult to get the data to prove. But when we were there the week before Christmas 1994 Meribel didn't have many of their lifts open at all. Not that we were too worried as almost everything in Courchevel was open so we just hopped over to the next valley and skied there instead. But to our surprise, after travelling home on the Saturday the Sunday Times snow report the following day said something "Meribel has only had 13% of its lifts open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday". So a quick photocopy of the newspaper and a speculative claim we fully expected to be rejected - outcome a free holiday.

That's a great story OKanagan! (Although maybe a reason why they went out of business)

I think that was actually because the owner of the company died. Probably unlikely that enough people would have spotted the small print evidence to have claimed on the guarantee.

We went with Ski BEach Viallas and I thought they had been bought out by Neilson; not simply no longer in business

Does anyone remember 'Tracer'. They were a very low budget operator, but superbly organised. My cheapest ever holiday, but also the best of my thirty ski holidays.

Club Mark Warner – ‘definitely for the more sociable skiers’. Now simply ‘Mark Warner’: the largest independent ski company left. |

Skiworld – founded in 1982, Skiworld is the largest independent ski operator in the UK |
Have I overlooked a technicality? How can both statements be true?

Good point admin. I think it should be Mark Warner are the largest independent left, and Skiworld are the largest ski specialist. Something like that!

Probably before 1984 I went to Mayerhofen before Christmas with Hards for £100 for the week. A Midlands firm. Mrs Hard , I think, was Austrian and they did lo cost coach and fly. They had one Dart Herald and flew cross-channel from Lydd---in the news again this week as they are seeking to expand the airport. It was ex ww2 and in the mists of Romney marsh I fully expected to see a Spitfire on the tarmac still fighting the War. Coming back the plane was out of action but they didn't want to admit this and we kept getting "hopeful"reports on our coach journey. When it eventually became clear something was up (they had fixed a boat crossing alternative) some of the very important skiers (in their opinion) got really on their high horses against the poor courier. I still condemn myself for not speaking up for her. Oh, they had important business meetings, their chauffeurs would be in the wrong place , they pointed to the small print, dear God they laid it on.
It was a great week (spent mainly at Hintertux accessed like sardines on the morning bus) and fortunately the Channel crossing was good so it was just one big adventure for me.
I think Hards were just too small and went out of business two or three years later.
