Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Dry Slope Ski Damage

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I ski quite regularly on a dry slope and find that my ski bases are being damaged by the surface. Gouges are developing in the base next to the edges particularly under the bindings. I guess this type of damage is difficult to repair but is there anything I can do to prevent it? I wax the skis quite regularly but the dendix seems to strip it straight off?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Try Using hard wax that the racers use e.g Swix CH4, iron very flat don't scrape, apply back to black over for more speed keeps bases going for longer. Sounds if you are at a slope without sprinklers? When dry, use a small piece of carpet and spray with Mr Sheen the king of plastic racing, run over it before each run. The harder Ptex based skis last longer (?Ptex3) Salomon slalom lasted 5 years of plastic, still lend to people base ground twice still not railed.

Gouges can happen from hitting mat ties (twisters) check that they are all lower than the mat and facing down hill and that the toe track has the ties the other way around. Counter slopes are also a challenge for ties and for ski damage from rotating to a stop in the same area..

But as the saying goes if you can ski well on plastic, you can ski well, good luck hope above helps and your car will always smell really clean.

Gouges adjacent to the edges is were the base material has melted away due to excessive heat, particularly under the bindings 'cause that's were the pressure is.

It can be repaired but you need a proper welded repair as, as you've found, a basic candle repair won't hold. You'll need either a Skimender RP100 repair pistol or Kunzmann Base Doc II tool to do a welded repair. Might also need to weld in some metalgrip as a foundation layer is the damage is down to the metal/core.

+1 to Cynic's advise. Datawax PolarX is a good alternative to CH4 & is easier to apply. Also recommended is Zardoz Notwax teflon overlay.

sledger, My method of protecting the bases is detailed here: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=2019823&highlight=felix#2019823

Thanks for all the advice everyone-very useful

The slope has sprinklers but as spyderjon says the problem is 16 stone of pressure on the edges causing excessive heat!
