Poster: A snowHead
|
Ok so I had the pleasant surprise of finding out that I've got 10 days of holiday left. Must be taken by 31 December. I'll use 3 or 4 for long weekends, but that leaves me with a week of December skiing. Any snowhead with suggestions on where to go?

Cedric, Go somewhere high - Tignes, Zermatt etc to make sure you get snow. Which week are you thinking of ?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm flexible about the week, the later the better I guess, though I'm not sure about Christmas to New Year - it tends to be busy doesn't it?
Is it a good idea, price-wise, to leave it late? (will I end up paying 3x flight cost and 2x accommodation?)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Christmas/new year is fairly busy but we've been based in Meribel a couple of times that week and had a great time. There is so much piste in the 3valleys that you can always get away from the crowds.
Although we have already booked for this year there usually seems to be some late availability for this period especially if you are flexible with destination.
You could of course book flights now and then sort out accomodation nearer the time if you are flexible. It might mean staying a short drive from the piste but you can choose a resort with snow!

Cedric, Tignes. Tignes. Or maybe Tignes.
SCGB aka The Ski Club do a very popular instruction week in Tignes in December (did it last year - highly recommend it). Includes travel, transfers, H/B, and full-day instruction with a bunch of British instructors based in France, discounted lift & equipment hire = very good value. It's helpful that you're constantly learning as you're not so aware of how crap the snow is.
If that doesn't grab you, the weeks before xmas are a customer's market - TOs and chalet/hotel owners everywhere are desperate to get punters.

The week in Banff shown in Wear The Fox Hat's link above looks good. The Caribou Lodge is a really nice hotel, you're practically guaranteed snow in Sunshine (the resort is scheduled to open 11 Nov) & £599 is a pretty good price.

Cedric, Come to Les Deux Alpes - most of the skiing is above 2100m, so even if theres greenery in the town, you're guaranteed snow between 2100 and 3600. Cable car up and down is quick, and you'll have the place to yourself before Xmas. I'm looking at a cheeky week there early December. You could leave the accommodation until the day before you go at that time of year. There's 30,000 beds in the town -so you'll get a good deal from someone. Same as any resort at that time. Alternatively, just wait to see where the snow is and do a last minute booking. Like Manda says, operators are fighting to get people on their books before xmas, so you won't pay over the odds.

Apart from the obvious , I'd echo paulmck's suggestion of Deux Alpes. There should be good snow and it'll be pretty quiet depending on how early you go. I've been there in mid-December and the snow high up was good, runs to the village were very poor but what do you expect? The downside was that only about half the bars/restaurants were open and (our accomodation was staffed by gap-year kids) the staff weren't up to speed. But that'll be the same in any resort.
