Looking for suggestions for next February, self, wife, and 2 daughters. Both girls strong skiers, wife is an off piste fanatic (but doesn't do touring) and then there's me...! We have been to Whistler twice, looking to go across the pond again for 8/9 nights. Any help appreciated!

Vail
Quite a characterless sprawn out purpose built town on Intersate 70.
Every Trail almost the same.
Plus side if your lucky & it Dumps then you can get into the back bowls

Vail and its next door neighbour Beaver Creek have their own TV channels. Not many skiing resorts have that.

Bollux everywhere in the US has its local RSN cable channel. Where else would you get to see the mindless gee-up of mediocre conditions dressed up as "awesome day on the mountain" evry breakfast time.
As to the original question, Vail wouldn't be my first choice for someone loving the off-piste terrain at WB, Tahoe in a combination of resorts or Utah might be reasonable. Jackson Hole is without doubt a real skier's mountain but it's a limited layout for those more inclined towards cruisers.

Vail, Copper, Beaver Creek all different very close together. Fly into Eagle rent a car.
Vail Good back bowls and some hairy tree skiing if you know where to look built as an Austrian resort, nice shop Gorsuch in main st. Beaver Creek Peyton Place on snow escalators to steeper piste & "Birds of Prey” Copper country to Vail's City style good off-piste and very high.
Vail is the lowest of the 3 but is still 8000 to sleep so AMS is a possibility. My favourite area and am going back again next year after the 3V and Val d' have wearied me again. Just make sure they have had some early snow before committing to the cost would be my advice, US not good this year.
Fat planks best skis plenty over there to rent as they invented them.

Cynic, 'hairy tree skiing' - I struggled to find anything I'd consider remotely steep there, best I found about 6 turns that were steepish from memory!! What do you find better about it compared to the 3V??

Been once dont need to again, nice mellow hills with a US purpose built, European village type resort. Great if you like Disney World. If you loved Whistler Village then you may enjoy Vail. Beaver Creek is even more purpose built, but some different skiing since all the beginner stuff is at the top of the mountain, due to its shape. Vail is an easy resort to visit, some people love it some dont.
Really if you are wanting to go to Colorado, Aspen is good, giving you plenty of choice and different experiences at each mountain, backside of Snowmass is good, plenty of terrain of the off piste variety ( you wouldnt know it to look at the piste map ) Steeps and trees Highlands too is fun
If you dont want to go to Colorado then skinanny, suggestion is good too, hire a 4x4 though to explore a bit more
You could head to Jackson, better than Vail but smaller, spend a day or two at Targhee for something different, or try some mountains in Utah.

Keystone or Breckinridge are worth a look if my Japan suggestion isn't suitable
If your wife likes powder and isnt fussed about seeing the sun Japan is a no brainier in my view!!

+1 for Keystone for good groomed and ungroomed terrain and proximity to the steepest, most challenging skiing in the area at nearby A-Basin.
+2 for Hokkaido, Japan.

Vail is a fair substitute for Whistler. Vail has a contrived character at the base but it does has a large ski area and would be good for a week. The back bowls are wonderful when the snow is deep. This season the snowfall in Colorado was poor so that the back bowls of Vail, Copper and A-basin had limited opening. They rely on the back bowls to make them exceptional ski areas. Previous season the snowfall was very good. Next season ?
Utah is probably a safer bet for good snow. japan even better.
Jackson Hole if you like a challenge and a fun wild west town.
Aspen is an interesting place to stay. The 4 different hills add enough variation to stop it being repetitive.
You need to do them all, have a change each trip !

Looks like I will have to investigate Japan. I hear Ryan air fly there...the airport is called johnlennon, anywhere near the ski resorts?

Definitely check out Jackson. Much more to offer than Vail unless you're travelling particularly early in the season or have an unhealthy obsession with groomers.

Have you thought about interior BC? eg. Big White, Silver Star, Revelstoke etc. Plenty of easily accessible lift served off-piste in all those places and usually no shortage of powder in Feb.
