Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Historic Snow Depth date question

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I am looking at the historic snow depth data that I can find on line for Alpe d'Huez for April.

Looking at Igluski gives me this chart:

http://www.igluski.com/france/alpe-d-huez-snow-history_1602

Which has for April 2010 - 2011 lower slope depth of 59cm and upper slope depth of 227cm. It claims that SKi Club of GB are the source of the data.

However visiting the Ski club of GB website looking at their historic data I get this

http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/snowreports/historical/snowreport.aspx/Alpe-dHuez

Which has for the lower slope 15cm for week one, then N/A for the weeks 2 and three, which I assume means basically 0cm for 2010/11

How can alledgely the same source data be so wildy out? Do they have a different definition of the height of "lower slopes"?

Any ideas?

Thanks

It's possible they took the last measurement in March as the beginning of April, but it still doesn't equate to 59.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Seeing the Skiclub one has left me slightly worried about going their mid April, and I am now thinking of going back to St Anton. We had a fantastic time when we went there before and would love to go back one day.

So again I have looked at the two sources:

http://www.igluski.com/austria/st-anton-snow-history_3306

and

http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/snowreports/historical/snowreport.aspx?resort=St-Anton

Again definite discrepencies but at least both are looking good for April.

Has anybody been to either resort in April (especially last season) who can comment on whether those reports bare any resemblance to reality?

Thanks

The problem you can have in ADH is that many of the runs there are south facing and suffer in the sun late in the season.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks Colin that is worth knowing.

And these snow depth reports for the same periods look different too (although I think I'd probably trust them more) ... http://www.alpedhueznet.com/ski/snow/report/page-2.html

AdH is a great town during the season but I wouldn't risk it that late.
As Colin B says, it's mostly South facing so, as great as that is in January, it means the snow ebbs away pretty quickly at the tail end of the season. OK, at its peak it goes pretty high but there aren't many runs at that altitude and even the iconic Sarrene finishes way down at resort level.

My personal fave in April is Val Thorens (no surprises there!) as the resort is up at 2300m with almost all the skiing above it and there are 6 places on the lift system that take U over 3000m.

Thanks for the input all good knowledge I think I am now sold on St Anton. Esprit don't have a place in Val Thorens and we have been to Courchevel a couple of times so (including our last skiing holiday)

April 2011? These photos are from the 14th

As you can see the Ski Club are basically correct. At this point you could only return to the bottom of the runs via the Marmottes (the piste nearest to the viewer was grass at the bottom) and then only due to a huge amount of artificial snow.

With anything follow the money. Igluski are trying to sell you holidays.

look at the current Bergers webcam at 1850 meters

http://alpedhuez.livecam360.net/bergers

and compare to this photo I took today of les 7 Laux (base of runs 1350 meters)

Wow that looks awful (the first pic, second looks awesome). FWIW I was in Les Arcs for first week of April and the snow was fantastic. Had a good 1600m of vertical skiing and everything was open from 1600m and up (some people I met were still skiing down to 1400 even). I imagine it holds up pretty well for late season skiing in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks davidof, I really appreciate that, it says I can't trust the igluski source.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
