Poster: A snowHead

Going to Whistler for three weeks in Nov/Dec and I need travel insurance for wintersports from a French provider (what with being resident in France etc). Anyone done this? Or know any UK companies which deal with non-UK residents? A tour of the web turns up plenty of travel insurance but very few companies which even mention wintersports, let alone offer a specialist policy.

Lizzard, I did this years ago and found a UK company, I think it might have been Columbus but it did take a lot of phoning round the major players. The main points I recall were that they insisted that in the event of any need to repatriate you you would be repatriated back to France, which given that's where we lived at the time we couldn't understand why they made a fuss. Also the coverage levels were lower than the equivalent UK based policy but still more than enough for our needs.
Edited to say it was an annual policy as well

Lizzard, Not in France any more, but I got coverage through my car insurer if I remember correctly. Now I am covered worldwide by the ADAC (German equivalent of the AA). I also had annual insurance and still have.

Gilberts Fridge, the whole point is that I want to be repatriated back to France! I could use my brother's/a friend's address and go with the likes of Dogtag, but that could mean someone having to deal with a broken boarder, which I can't imagine would be popular. Columbus seems to have a French end, looks like the sort of thing I need - thanks.

Lizzard, Finally remembered, mine was through Mondial Assistance - they also did my car insurance at the time. It comes under Assurance Voyage according to the papers I have in my insurance file.

Think mine is worldwideinsure (only for EU residents, repatriation to the specified country of EU residence). All the others I looked at were silly money. Plus I have the ADAC insurance, which covers a lot (at least the repatriation and car repatriation etc.). I'm sure I could get better German policies, but it's not a massive expense to have something in English (a few £ more than for a UK resident).
The one I used to use removed the non-UK bit (and still keep spamming me details telling me that I haven't renewed )

Lizzard, try insurancebookers. I am not UK based and have used these for a number of years for both single trips and annual (always including winter sports)

Not the question you've asked but presumably you know that Nov/Dec isn't always the greatest time for snow cover in Whistler if you're proposing a real ski holiday?

Lizzard, We are insured with Assurance Multisport which covers skiing at home (France) and abroad with repatriation to France. Cost 54 Euros for an annual policy.

Gosh this is brining back a few memories, I also recall the reason we went with a UK company is that their coverage for medical and liability was way higher than any of the French companies,so it may be worth looking at the UK arm of whatever insurance co you go with.

At the time we wanted the same and however much we agreed, they kept making a big song and dance about it as if we didn't understand.

fatbob, I fear I would find it difficult to get three weeks off in the middle of February.
Stella, I've seen several in that price range and I don't get it. That can't be for comprehensive cover including medical expenses, surely? I'm assuming it's just search and rescue plus initial transport.

Lizzard, Maybe it doesn't include kit insurance/delays etc where most of the claims are (and a good portion of the fraud that keeps UK hol ins so expensive)

You know it makes sense.
|
chocksaway, it's also vastly cheaper than non-wintersports travel insurance sold by French companies, which doesn't make sense.

Lizzard, I have been looking into the same thing. Medical cover seems to be about 5-10k and search and rescue 50k, and with Austrian Alpine one it's 15k health and 25k search and rescue... but the health payment is after social security, which is not much help as a European in Canada, with bog standard UK travel insurance offering you millions in these circumstances.
I will be looking at this again but please update us if you find something good... and have a fab time in Whistler.

miranda, 10k for medical cover strikes me as woefully inadequate. Columbus looking like the best bet so far.

Lizzard, Yes, what we have is 10k medical.
Have you appraoched your assurance maladie provider to see what they want? But the more the cover, the more it costs!

Hi Lizzard,
I've got an annual travel insurance policy from MMA - wasn't cheap but covers medical etc pretty well. Doesn't make a distinction between original nationality so covers UK trips too.
Wintersports holidays outside France are covered, but not off-piste - it's not a specific winter sports policy just their normal annual travel insurance.
Hope that helps?
Heather
