Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Kaprun funicular catastrophe: acquittals of 8 defendants confirmed

[This thread has been re-titled, following the court's verdict - see 4th posting]

The November 2000 fire aboard the Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) underground funicular railway, which killed 155 skiers and snowboarders, eventually resulted in the acquittal of all those held responsible by Austrian prosecutors - 15 defendants in all.

An appeal case has now opened in Linz, in which the acquittals of 8 of the original defendants are being re-examined by a group of judges. The verdicts will either be upheld, changed, or a full retrial may take place. The original trial began in June 2002, but legal complications delayed its conclusion until February 2004.

Separate civil lawsuits have been issued against the companies involved, on behalf of over 100 victims' families, in both Austria and the USA.

stanton, many thanks. Brain malfunction while typing [I dated the disaster at 1990 in the opening sentence] and have corrected the above to 2000.

It's now reported that the appeal is over. The acquittals of eight defendants have now been confirmed by the Higher Regional Court in Linz.
