Poster: A snowHead

Are there any organised groups out there that cater for a 19yr old lad who wants to go on a skiing holiday. He's been with us twice, and that is the only skiing he's ever done. He doesn't mind travelling alone, but would like some company / fun once he got there. (His friends can't afford to go because they are poor university students. Our lad is working) Any help much appreciated.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I've been with Oakhall a couple of times and there have been several people on their own there. They don't charge much extra for single supplements should he want a single room (and providing they have the space) but if he is happy to share with other blokes, then it would be dead easy.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You could try your nearest dry ski slope, they usually have club holidays already organised. Or get him to convince his poor university mates that they could afford to go on the university ski/board club's annual trip, or they could just find out when they are for him. A few ski holiday companies now do sharer weeks (I know Neilson do).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

SCGB have two under-20s weeks this year. If he's taken to it well, I would imagine he'd probably be at blue level, so within the skill range, but check against the description (skills level is more important than time on skis). Unfortunately they are running no green-level holidays this year. I suspect they would be mostly 15-16 yos on them though, so whether he enjoys it may depend on how (im)mature he's feeling at the time. I've skied with one of the regular u-20s leaders and, as you might expect, those weeks sound a bit of a riot and great fun. You could give them a call and see what ages are booked in already.

if he's keen to improve his ski-ing he might like doing one of the specialist courses - Phil Smith for example, though there are plenty of others. That would give some structure to his holiday, and he'd be sure to meet some people to ski with out of lesson time. It's often possible to do a "pot luck" room share, rather than pay single supplement.

You could try UCPA in France. Basic accom (shared rooms), but the food is OK and the price very good (includes tuition, ski pass and gear rental). www.ucpa.com

erica2004, Our friends daughter, (who is at uni) invited our daughter (who was only 17 and still at college) on her Uni ski/board trip to Les Arcs, the whole trip cost around £350 for travel by coach, ski pass and self catering accomodation. If your son waits a while, his Uni friends can probably join the Uni Ski & Board Club and they may be able to invite him to join them on any of their arranged trips. My daughter had a wonderful time both on and off the piste.
