Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

World's most famous ski jump "may be torn down"

Holmenkollen, Oslo, the most historic and famous ski jump in the world, may be demolished because it does not meet current international competition standards. The International Ski Federation has demanded changes if Oslo is to be approved as a venue for a major World Cup competition in 2011.

There is now a controversy over rebuilding the jump, because of its sensitive location above the city.

This report from Aftenposten.
Quote:
... Oslo, which has applied to host the World Cup competition five-and-a-half years from now, will either have to tear down the existing ski jump and build a bigger one, build a new ski jump somewhere else, or drop its World Cup bid.

Oslo City Council voted yesterday to host the 2011 'Ski World Championship', according to the report linked below. The city is looking to the Norwegian government to provide half the £26 million cost of rebuilding the Holmenkollen jump.

This report from The Norway Post.

The event referred to in both the above links is, in fact, the 2011 Nordic World Ski Championships.
For interest, here's a page from the FIS site indicating forthcoming World Championships (alpine, nordic and snowboard) in 2007, 2008 and 2009:

Pretty good value, I would have thought. Once you take in the scale of the structure - even the existing jump is massive - and all the spectator facilities, it amounts to quite a construction site.

The current facility houses one the world's premier ski museums - well worth a visit - and I don't know if they'd have to rebuild that as part of the scheme.

I guess it's the most significant landmark in Oslo. There's public access to the top of the jump tower, which has great views of the city because Holmenkollen itself is high in the hills (though you can access it with an easy ride by metro train from the city centre).

I'd say it's very likely to go ahead, because Holmenkollen is such a powerful element in Norwegian sport - and the jump's already been rebuilt umpteen times to reach or advance international standards. I guess part of the problem is that ski jumps just get bigger, and there's maybe no international agreement to say 'enough'.
