Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi everyone. I have been looking at buying my first set of skis, and after speaking to a few people have managed to narrow it down to either Nordica Fire Arrow 74s or K2 aftershocks.
I am an advanced intermediate. I would say about 70% of my skiing is on piste, but as I improve I can see myself moving towards more off piste stuff, so ideally want a ski that can handle both.
Please share your experiences of either of these skis please. Thanks

If you are looking at the k2 range I would try the Rictor as well.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Also there seems to be a fair difference in the width of those 2 skis so not sure how easily you can compare. I would think the Nordica are much more piste biased.
How did you come to single these 2 out anyway? There are loads of other skis that will give you reasonable piste and off piste performance. Always good to test a few and see which feels best for you instead of concentrating on one or 2 brands
Anyway no doubt someone here will have tried both and give you some good advice soon enough!

Have skiied Rictors, they were pretty fun.
As noted above there's a fair difference in width there (74mm for the Nordicas and 86mm for the Aftershocks). The K2 Chargers are the same width as the Nordicas and are probably closer in terms of performance.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Sorry I have got muddles up! I have spent the last few days trawling the internet for skis and got the pairs mixed up.
What i meant to say is the K2 Aftershock vs Rictor? The aftershock is 86mm underfoot and the rictor 80mm. Will I really notice the difference between the two whilst they are on the piste?
Thanks

think the firearrow 80 ti would be a fairer ski to compare against an aftershock... the firearrow 80s are awesome on piste... I loved them

I have the Rictor, good ski, pretty heavy and stiffish. Good at speed, responds well to fairly aggressive skiing. Worked ok for me in some off the side of the piste fresh (v poor off piste technique....) but I'm a little one at 5'7" and 62kg so might not be great for a heavier person
I also have a set of missions which are getting their first outing tmw in the dome, they are 86 mm underfoot so ill let you know if I can tell much diff between the widths. Though I doubt they will be as solid as my Rictors, def a bit lighter as well.

I rode the Aftershocks for a day last week. Personally, I didn't particularly rate them. They ski absolutely fine, hold decent edge, pretty quick edge to edge, but for me they gave very little feedback. I like a pretty lively ski which can tell me what's happening beneath my feet and these just felt a bit 'non'.

Well not the direct comparison you want but I had a go on my missions the other day. Compared to my Rictors I didnt notice too much diff with the width. However they are def a lot softer and lighter and if you wanted to hoon it around on piste I think is go for my Rictors as they just feel more solid and better at speed.
Both skis v nice though, mission I think would float better in deeper snow so could be same for aftershock. I think you should go demo the rictor and aftershock and anything else you can (mission, some dynastar range? )

Thanks Gareth. I am going to look at some K2 rictors on Monday. I have no almost completely ruled out the Aftershocks, think they will just be a bit too wide for the majority of the skiing I do.
