Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing Japan's north island - Hokkaido - a useful report

 Poster: A snowHead

This is a neat little article about three ski resorts on Hokkaido - Furano, Rusutsu and Niseko - by a reporter for the New Zealand website stuff.co.nz., Susannah Petty. Click here.

Furano sounds pretty wild!

Anyone else skied up there?

David Goldsmith, I skied Hirafu on Hokkaido in 2000. It was my first proper week's skiing for about 8 years at the time and it was fantastic. Seriously cold, but the quality of the snow is excellent. Not just lots of it but it's also that dry powder that you can really float through. There are some beautiful runs through the trees where I overstretched myself on a couple of occassions and became what we like to call aboreally embraced.

I stayed in a Japanese B&B with my g/f, and three Aussies and ended up seeing most of the three adjoining montains at that resort. My only caveat would be the cold - if you suffer, you will really need to wrap up warm.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There's a lot of stuff about the food and off-slope activities: not much about the skiing, though.

Skied in Niseko about 6 years ago. Great place and really friendly with a fantastic atmosphere and good skiing; really recommended.

Raced at Furano in Feb 1987. Yes, the powder was light and plentiful. The lower part of the mountain is flattish, but near the top I remember some fantastic steep tree-skiing in deep powder. In those days it was virtually untracked - don't know how much that has changed. Pretty remote and rural feel to the area.

i went to niseko and rusutsu last march - timing getting slightly towards the end of season, but even so i think i was unlucky with the snow quality. riseko higashiyama was fine, but rusutsu seemed like it only had a week or two left.

the hokkaido resorts are great, but very far away from each other - a 2hr drive to get from niseko to rustsu for example, if you want a change of scenery.

hokkaido is really popular with aussies, but there are some cracking resorts all across the country. i mostly go to yuzawa and naeba [especially kagura]. hakuba in nagano recommended also though.
