hey wondering if anyone can recommend a bootfitter in Munich or a couple of hours outside? I have read some recommendations for Ertl Renz and went there today but they only sell their own custom boots (manufactured by Lange and Salomon) and they take 2 weeks to get and cost €850

lynseyf, can you be arsed driving to Lech to get to Strolz? http://www.strolz.at/skischuh/schuheintro.php Had mine 4 years and love them. Not the coolest looking boots but certainly best fitting I've ever had. You might find some other places stock/fit them closer to Munich.

Thanks but I don't have a car, I'm based in Munich now so am looking for somewhere easy to get to by train, think Strolz sounds similar to what Ertl Renz do anyway, can't see any prices on the Strolz website but I would have imagined they would have been in the €850 range?

I think you will find that fairly common over here to be honest. I know a very good boot fitter in Austria who sorted out one of Queen Boudcia's boots for nothing, but he is a friend of mine and probably did it as a favour to me. He knows that she will probably be back next year to buy correctly fitted boots any way.
Usually the boots you buy from any shop are tweeked until you have no complaints and that is a part of the purchase price. You could try going to Sport Scheck or Sport Schuster (both near Marienplatz) and asking there. There are also some good fitters at Iko in Raubling (just south of Rosenheim) and in Oberaudorf (also just south of Rosenheim), but how easily they will alter boots that were bought elsewhere I really do not know.

Samerberg Sue, I don't want a fitter to alter boots that were bought else where, I want new boots. Ertl Renz don't sell any off the shelf boots, you go in, get a 3d scan made of your feet and legs then they send the measurements to a factory where they make a wooden mould of your foot and leg then the boots are formed to this from what I can understand, this takes 2 weeks. I am quite prepared to pay RRP for boots, I just feel I am paying for the posh location of the shop and the Ertl Renz branding on Salomon or Lange boots so was looking for another recommendation, I also would prefer to not wait 2 weeks.

lynseyf, book a ski holiday down in the mountains... go to a shop... say I want some boots to fit my feet (try a couple of different shops)... then buy boots selected to fit your feet (rather than boots that a shop has in stock that will be abused to be able to kinda feet your feet a little bit).
It really isn't rocket science to find decent fitting boots when in the Alps!

flangesax, I tried that a couple of years ago when I was in Mayrhofen, I asked my ski instructor where he got his boots, went there and they were really unhelpful, didn't measure my feet, didn't shell check but picked a pair of boots based on my Euro shoe size. I'm not trying to be awkward and I realise it's not rocket science but I know there are a few people who live near Munich on here so I figured some of them must have boots that fit well. I have just started a new job so can't go for a holiday yet hence why looking for places a few hours from Munich. I wanted to go skiing this weekend so am happy to spend that time getting boots fitted and I'm going to the Ski Welt for the weekend next weekend.

lynseyf, just try a bit harder!... avoid Saturdays as the shops are busy with rentals. The bonus of buying 'in resort' is that you just go next door to the next shop and start again... see if recommendations are the same and the advice etc.. etc...

Buy your boots where you ski so you can go back for free adjustments during their break in period. Obviously that only works if you spend a few days in that place. St Anton/Lech has some good bootfitters (I can recommend Phillip at the Jennewein next to the Rendlbahn). If you're more into one day trips then buy them in Munich. In any case Sport Schuster and Sport Scheck probably can't be beaten in range of ski boots stocked. Scheck is an authorised Strolz dealer, or at least they were back in 1998 when I bought mine there.

lynseyf, I would strongly recommend Rob Graham at Daleboot in Kitzbuhel. He is Mr Daleboot and owns the brand. He is the only person on this planet who has ever made me boots that fit.
Not cheap at €6-700 but 3 hours or so of fitting and your skiing for the next few years in boots that are as comfortable as carpet slippers. The price also includes servicing and replacement parts for the life of the boot.

Thought it might be (although the train isn't bad) - he's just the only person I know of with a good rep for bootfitting in the area.

you would think it were simple, but based on comments above and the number of people we see with problems it is not that simple, yes germany is sat near the mountains and has loads of skiers but the market is no where near as technical as the UK or america so you just tend to get given a pile of boots to try on and go with what feels the best (normally too big but feels comfortable) a lot of europeans ski for a weekend here and a day or 2 there so they don't have the same demands on their kit, so long as they can slide form bar to bar all is good
sure there are some great boot fitters but like every country they are concentrated around certain areas or few and far between, unfortunately without going down the specialist boot fitter/custom boot route is is a bit hit and miss
