We're based in Flachau this week. Does anyone have any recommendations for a day trip out to a nearby resort?
Flachauwinkl and Zauchensee have both been mentioned so far. We have a car so are not reliant on buses.
We thought a little excursion may be interesting.

The 4 hills of Schladming is only 25mins by car. You could park at Reiteralm, the nearest part of Schladming to Flachau and ski across to Hauser Kaibling and back to Reiteralm. Or Hochkonig area is I guess 30mins or Gasteins 30+ mins away.

waynos, We'd looked at Schladming as well.
We have a day between the kids ski lessons. and we're open to suggestions.
If anything, an area quieter than Flachau was what we were after. We did expect it to be busy as it is a holiday week. The queues here have been silly at times.

Zauchensee/Flachauwinkl is a must. Great and different feel to Flachau. Wagrain if you have not done it yet.
Schladming if you have a car will be nice as well. Or even head straight to Hauser Kaibling. Nicer cruising there if that's your thing.

FraserP, pop round to Wagrain, on the Graffenberg side and cruise over to Alpendorf. If the queue for the Graffenberg gondola looks long, go round to the right and take the new Graffenberg Express, no queue there usually. It goes halfway and then you switch to the Graffenberg Express chairlift. The way over to Alpendorf is well signposted. When you get there play on Red 60. Long run with lots of variety and trees if visibility gets bad. The Talabfahrt to Alpendorf is another long fun run if done in the middle of the day. Most of the runs there and back Wagrain /Alpendorf are tree-lined should it clack in.
You can top up with cheap fuel at the Shell station on your way back to Flachau. It is always a couple of cents cheaper there, especially if you have an AA card (part of a European wide collaboration including ADAC and ÖMAC). You get a discount on Shell fuel when you present the card before the money.
Zauchensee, entering from Flachauwinkel is a must do. And Radstadt is fun if mixed with a slide down the toboggan run. Take snow boots with you though as you are not permitted to wear ski boots on it. Best 5 Alpen Bucks enjoyment on the whole circuit. 5 Euro to hire and 5 Euro deposit and 7 kilometres of pure enjoyment from the top to bottom of the mountain.

FraserP, in my experience Flachau is the worse area around here for queues. Was out in Schladming on Sunday and no queues. Been at Radstadt last 2 days and again no queues, quite busy with ski schools but lift systems copes no problem.

Samerberg Sue, Zauchensee, entering from Flachauwinkel is the likely contender at the moment for Tuesday, with Radstadt on Thursday.
Thanks for your suggestions.

FraserP, definitely do the toboggan run in Radstadt. Like Samerberg Sue says, it's massive fun. I couldn't stop giggling the whole way down, great fun with a group (even better with a dog too!).

Samerberg Sue, Where do we go in Radstadt to do the toboggan run?

FraserP, The cheapest way to do it is during skiing time. to get to the slopes at Radstadt - follow the signs to Radstadt then Obertauern. At the roundabout by all the shops (Hofer amongst others) take the first right and then follow the signs (an people to Königslehen). The car park is right by the gondola. Basically the slopes are on the opposite side of the valley to the town.
At around 3.00pm finish skiing and return your gear to the car and put your snow boots on. Then you go to the Kasse and buy hire tickets for the toboggans (5 Euro to hire and 5 Euro deposit). Then you walk round the the gondola and you will see all the toboggans. After being given one you just go up the gondola using your ski pass. If you go on a Tuesday ot Friday evening (only times it is open after the end of the day) you have to pay for the lift as well so the cost goes up a lot! when you return the toboggans at the end of the ride, you get your deposit back.

Don't know about you we skied most of the Ski Amade by staying in Flachau (or more accurately in Flachauwinkel) as we could go to Schladming on one side and Gastein Valley on the other end. There 25 places one can ski with the SKi Amade pass.

Hi would really rate a visit to the Stegbachlift area of Alpendorf. Spent two days there last week in fresh powder and is very quiet as only a Long T-bar serving a black only area. The opportunities to explore the valley and trees are fabulous and in two days I managed fresh tracks on each run.
As you look at the piste map it is at the top of Alpendorf and runs down to the right.
Have fun!

Today, the kids had a lesson in the morning but, due to adverse weather, it was held near the StarJet 1 lift. Apparently through the trees off piste!. PM we returned to the AchterJet as it had opened but the weather was still foul. Heavy snow and strong winds. We gave it a couple of runs with an odd stop for 'refreshments'.
Looks like Radstadt will be a 'miss' this year as for Thursday it's looking like Flachauwinkle and Kleinarl. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding food stops on these slopes? Friday looks like we will again be staying on our home hill.
Many thanks for all the advice.

Head to Kleinarl from the appropriate FW car park (other side of the motorway to the Zauch access gondola).taking the 1st chair. Could be the sun jet chair. Anyhow, as the chair is getting to its arrival station you pass a resto on the left. Get off the chair and pole the 30m back.
Tirolergroestle is magnificent.

We'll now be staying here in Flachau rather than travelling, unless when we get to the lifts there are local closures like yesterday. Looking good so far only the higher lifts afftected Website reports 100% of pistes but 75% of lifts? Hmm .......

FraserP, if you do make it to Flachauwinkl/Kleinarl, stop at Frauenalm, right next to the Absolute Park in Flachauwinkl. It´s really the best value for lunch on the hill, not the most modern hut, but you can get the daily special, usually something like a Tirolergröstl or a goulash, with pasta and salad for 6 euros! The portions are huge and all home made, and you can almost always get a seat there. Yesterday while everyone was fighting for a place lower down the mountain, I was the only guest at 11.30 There is a photo on snowmediazone if you want to see what it looks like
If you are staying in Flachau try the hut just above the Achterjet, I think it´s called "Unterbergalm", that is always pretty quiet, people seem to miss it as they ski down or, if you want a really great lunch and are prepared to eat a bit earlier, the "Purzelbaum" just a little way down from the Space jet 1 ( it´s the one with the loud music blaring out all day!!)is fantastic, really traditional, but it does get busy by 12. They make some mean chicken wing there
