Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

With badly fitting boots why do you tend to lose toe nails? Is it not enough room for the toes or the toes banging about or both?

Liszton3, Welcome to Snowheads. Toe nails dropping off skiing is sometimes down to fungal nail infection rather than bad fitting boots, I only got my big toe nails back after a rest from skiing Shocked Shocked

Jivebaby, was ages ago in a rental boot lost both, but last year lost one in a new pair of steelie toes.

Saw mention of it in another thread which got me wondering. I know that blisters come from rubbing but why is it always the big toenails that go?

Liszton3, sounds like you're rather prone to losing toenails -have you consulted a GP http://nailcare.ygoy.com/2009/06/12/is-your-toenail-falling-off/ --> as suggested by Puzzled livetoski,

I damaged a toenail (big toe) skiing with boots slightly loose in an ill-advised attempt to get a bit more flexibility. No problems with new boots properly done up. I think the toenail was hitting the end of the boot and affecting the tissue at the base of toenail. I didn't lose the toenail completely but I had a bruise which appeared after the holiday that worked its way up the nail.

I have no idea why it happened to me. The first year I had my current boots, the only issue was numbness due to cold and nerve damage. The second year I lost both big toenails. This year I had one boot stretched on the advice of the boot fitter in resort and the other big toenail came off. My boots are clearly too small but I don't feel any pain, probably due to aforementioned nerve damage. I will definitely do something different for next season, either get the other boot stretched or give up with these small, stiff, difficult boots and buy some bigger ones. I have never had any toenail issues at any other time in my life.
