Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

anybody done a motorhome trip to alps ???

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
we're thinking of hiring a motorhome for 2 weeks during xmas and new year and travelling along the Verbier to Zermatt/Saas Fee corridor.

has anyone else done that or done a motorhome tour of the alps?

what are we going to expect
how to go about it
where to camp / and possible caravan club sites
where to park
how much is parking
how long in each resort
which resorts to avoid if lack of snow
where to do our clothes washing
what are the costs of camping etc

best place in south east to hire a campervan or does anyone want to rent one to us for cheap...

thanks

innerspaceservices, There's a place on the Belgian coast that specialises in camper hire and has new vans with winter specs, I'll see if I can dig out the contact details and post them here

innerspaceservices, have you tired to search - I do recall a couple of threads about this and there is one snowhead who goes to (I think) Livigno every year in a motorhome.

innerspaceservices, As holidayloverxx suggests, do a search.

I toured the Alps in a motorhome for five months a little while back. I should really have done a write-up but was too busy having fun. I can't comment on where you are planning to travel as I only visited Andermatt and Engelberg while in Switzerland but experience there was that you may only camp in particular places and pay for the privilege (can't recall how much but it wasn't cheap).

How long in each resort? I would suggest as long as possible - packing up and moving the motorhome was always tedious (although we had a lot of gear to secure). Besides, at that time of year you will be moving (and finding new campsites) in the dark if you want to make to most of skiing time.

It's certainly worth doing for a long period - not sure I'd be bothered for only 2 weeks. Either way though, I'm sure you'll enjoy snowHead

innerspaceservices, I replied to your post in your other post in Chalets and Appartment. I've used http://www.northernleisure.co.uk/ these guys before and am bringing one of their campers to the Hemel meet for people to have a look at. They are talking of placing some motorhomes in France so people can fly to Geneva and collect the motorhomes there but they just mentioned it to me so not sure if it will happen. I'm sure they'll put it on there site if they do it.
Their homes are all winterised with underfloor heating etc but as mentioned I'll have one at Hemel for people to check out on the 6th and they talked about snowheads discounts also.

Just back from a month in the alps in a 15 year old camper van bought for £1100. Very Happy
Got made credit crunch redundant, so decided to go for it.

> what are we going to expect

Skiing in a camper van is fine.
Biggest problem is getting your kit dry.
So dont ski if its raining!
Also it could be really cold in January, possibly -20c!
Even in a modern camper van that will be hardcore.
Spring (march / april) is much better option for a camper road trip.
Camping much better when you can sit outside.

> how to go about it

Rent or buy a van... Then off you go.
However I think a camper only becomes cheaper than an appartment for longer trips ?
Camper van rental in the alps is expensive. And so is the ferry crossing.
Get a big engine (2000cc) for the alpine passes.

> where to camp / and possible caravan club sites

We mainly just parked up at the lift stations / swimming pools / public car parks.
Small resorts seem to be much more tolerant than big resorts of this.
Zermatt for example was less than ideal for camper vans (you need to get a train up to resort).
La Grave and Andermatt were perfect and we parked 2 mins walk from the lift for free.

> where to park

The small resorts seemed to be much better / easier in the camper van.
More free places to park near the lifts / public toilets etc.

> how much is parking

Free - if you park out of town in sensible places!
15 euros a day in the underground car park at Tasch below Zermatt.

> how long in each resort

follow the snow!

> which resorts to avoid if lack of snow

The Zermatt to Verbier rhone valley is perfect for a camper van trip.
Check out bergfex.com
And dont be scared to hit up the smaller resorts such as Marecottes, Champex, Ovroynaz etc.
Often better snow, and always less people

> where to do our clothes washing

In a sink! You can get stuff pretty clean hand washing rolling eyes
We bought a solar shower. Which was great in April, but would be useless in mid winter.

> what are the costs of camping etc

About 10 euros p/p a night in a camp site.

We hired a motorhome from this motorhome hire company

One problem we found was that the water pipes froze up, check with the motorhome hire company first that the motorhome is fully winterized (all pipes lagged)

Other than this small problem, it was an awsome and cheap easy to way to get to the slopes...
