Poster: A snowHead
|
I am going to go Skiing for the first time in years and years at the end of March, but there is so much choice!!! How do I choose where to go and whether to stay in a hotel or catered Chalet!!!
I am currently looking at Les Arcs, would anyone reccomend this place? Or suggest other good Ski areas / accomodation choice.
Many Thanks...

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I would reccommend Les Arcs. Personally I would prefer a catered chalet over a hotel, but then I just do not like hotels.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

me too. I would rarely choose a hotel if I had any other option, but some people love them. The choice of resorts is mind-boggling. give us a bit more information about the kind of thing you like - not just the kind of skiing, but what you like to do in the evenings, etc etc etc.

I am an intermediate Skier and mainly there to enjoy the Skiing, however in the evening its nice to have something to do, but being mid-thirties I don't like to party too much, a nice drink and relax and maybe some light entertinment would be ideal.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

dee3879, I should think a catered chalet would be good then but best to choose a pretty big one, so that there's a more varied crowd. Are you travelling alone?
If you haven't skied "for years and years" you'll find that it's changed a lot - for the better - with modern carving skis etc and probably faster lifts than you remember, too.
You might get the most out of your holiday if you join a specialised ski clinic week, with lessons in the morning, small groups etc. You will certainly meet like-minded people and find someone to ski with in the afternoons. There are a number of different companies which specialise in this - and accommodation can be included.
If budget is a consideration the holidays at UCPA centres, marketed in the UK by Action Outdoors, are brilliant - all-in prices, top tuition, good company for a beer in the evenings guaranteed.
However, if you are on your own, you'd either have to share a small "dorm" room or (in some centres) pay a hefty supplement for single occupancy.
Though single supplements will be a problem in many places, if you don't want to share.
A huge range of resorts would suit your need for ski terrain - finding the right accommodation and, if you decide to have tuition, the right ski school, is probably a more critical consideration.

dee3879, Val d'Isere go to a nice hotel, none of these awful rip off chalets, where quality of anything, room size and fellow chalet mates is just pot luck. Of course if you are in to that sort of thing there are plenty in what must be France's premier resort, but at least you know you will not me disappointed by the skiing. Val d' has good bars a village atmosphere which has markedly improved over the years, which certainly 1850 doesn't have, nice restruants as a good news break on the tiresome chalet staff's night off, I went to the cinema once I think?
Did you mean light internment? I know a guy who

Les Arcs is excellent; you won't run out of piste in a week, and if you do just get the gondola across to La Plagne.
I highly recomment - as a gentle reintro to skiing - the Mont Blanc blue, which snakes down through the trees and is a) very easy and b) very pretty.
