Birthday-bashers will have something extra to celebrate Almost exactly eight years to the day since snowHeads was set up on 5 February 2004, the same month as Facebook, the UK's biggest snowsports forum is poised to celebrate the registration of its 30,000th member ...This week, around 60 snowHeads are in Arabba, in the Dolomites, for the S8BB – otherwise known as the snowHeads eighth birthday bash – the 2012 edition of one of the site's annual Alpine get-togethers. This is one of half a dozen annual trips to the mountains now organised for and by snowHeads.
As I write, the tally of registered snowHeads is 29,848, and the number of posts is approaching two million. The greatest number online at once is 490, in December 2011. People who aren't registered can see most of the content, but to post you need to be registered. Registration is free.
With apologies to the thousands of snowHeads who already know the story, snowHeads was set up by Graham MacMahon (aka admin), a keen skier, after the internet forum of the Ski Club of Great Britain was closed down to non-Ski Club members in February 2004. Wanting to stay in cyber-touch with the community he had “met” on the site, MacMahon set up SnowHeads overnight and learnt how to run an internet forum as he went. Its tally of users has climbed steadily ever since.
SnowHeads is – to our knowledge – the biggest English-language internet ski forum in Europe. In the US, Epicski.com has about 35,500 members and Tetongravity.com has about 90,500. In France, skipass.com has about 73,300.

Congratulations.
Facebook has captured roughly 12% of the world's population.
SnowHeads has captured roughly 1% of the world's ski and board population.
Plenty of scope for growth.

Congrats Graham,
Thanks for all your hard work and effort.
Everyone spread the word.
One day i will pluck up the courage to go on a SHB.
Not sure i could keep up, 20 ski trips with lots of beer but feel lightweight compared to some of the

And more scope for maths lessons, try 0.06% based on there being maybe 50m who claim to be skiers or boarders.

If you round up to the nearest non-zero number, it is 1%.
Furthermore, note the use of the word "roughly". Twice.
You dudes need reading reading lessons and a dictionary

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Whitegold, "roughly" means 97 is roughly a hundred.
My 0.06% is not roughly 1%... you are out by a multiple of 16 (roughly)

0.06% is roughly bugger all. Which leaves a lot of scope for expansion.
Around 4000 members have submitted more than 10 posts
About 18000 members have submitted 1 or less post. Of those 55% have submitted a single post pimping their alpine business.
Around 5% of members are active.
Roughly 10,000 members have sock puppets
ok I made some of that up.

Or to put it another way, if 0.1% = bugger all, then 0.06% = three-fifths of bugger all. (I often like to use that phrase!)

That's interesting, I was talking to a friend who's a moderator on another forum where they customarily use posting bans for bad behaviour - swearing, sexism, insults etc, length of ban varying depending on degree of offence. He'd just slapped a two week ban on someone for opening a second account as it's stricly against their rules...
