Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Persimmon or VR50 Pink Iridium Lenses

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have to purchase a new pair of goggles to fit my helmet and Oakleys seem to fit well but I can't decide on the lenses. Ideally a good all rounder so I don't have to switch during the day but I have found in the past that persimmon aren't great in brighter light. Are the VR50s good enough in flat light and snowy days or is it best to stick with persimmon?

Have got both and find the pink iridium fine in flat light or on snowy days, they're also better in bright sunlight than persimmon, although I also have fire iridium for the bluebird days...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hayls, copied section from a post i made on a different thread yesterday - i have persimon and vr50 pink iridium.

i puchased a spare VR50 pink iridium lense which i love for bright days. I have never liked the full dark lenses and this one works really well in bright light. reason i dont like the full dark lenses is that i tend to be first out and last back when i ski and how many times have you been heading back to the hotel with the sun behind the mountain and you are in the shadows? those really dark lenses are not good in those conditions.

Thanks, will probably go for the VR50s, but will just have a look at the Bolle modulating lens first as these may be a good all rounder - a bit cheaper too!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ah crap, I didn't think about trying my goggles when I bought a new lid*

*Didn't tell the wife I might need to buy some new goggles to fit the new lid.

Hayls, I used to have goggles with the Pink Iridium lenses - they're not bad as all-rounders, but not great in flat light.

Personally, I would rather squint a bit in bright sun, rather than compromise in flat-light - but that's just me.

It sounds like you're keen on Oakleys - but have a look at some of the Smith goggles - which are good quality pieces of kit (particularly on fogging-up, which seemed to be a problem with my Oakleys).

roche1800, I have the fire iridium for brighter days, love it. I still bang the persimmon in the sack and just swap if the cloud drops in.

I've recently opted for the Bolle Modulator Vermillion Blue after I heard a few recommendations as I understand they're for varying light... though not had a chance to try them on the slopes yet. I've also got Iridium lense goggles and sunglasses when it gets really bright.

abj, I decided to go for the best lense for flat light rather than an all rounder and ended up with some Smith Phenom Sensor mirror lenses. They seem great and I got a good price so they were better value than the equivalent Oakleys. Hopefully the mirror will provide a bit of extra protection in the sun, but they let loads of light in so we'll see.

Totally agree Very Happy I had Oakley Pink but sold them after one trip and bought another pair of Smiths Anthems - really like them, they fit well and have vents which come into their own when its hot. Even with vents closed steaming is rarely a problem.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

They're exactly the combination that I now have. Great goggles (certainly the best I've used - and I've tried a few) and the sensor mirror lens is really rather good.

Enjoy!
