Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pimp me your Ski Lock

Would be gutted if my skis got nicked. At least with a lock I'm lessening the risk and it would be safer re. insurance.

There are £7 combination lock cable jobbies from B&Q. They'll do. Small Light and good enough to deter your average drive-by tea-leaf.

I've a Kryptonite ski lock, had it for 5 years or so. It's small and pretty sturdy and I think they've improved it since too.

If you got a chunky bike lock, bolt cutter teeth cant fit it in their jaws http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORBIKE-BICYCLE-BIKE-SPIRAL-STEEL-CABLE-LOCK-1-METER-/130517452326?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Cycling_BikeLocks_SR&hash=item1e63724626

but i carry a rucksack anyway, I realise too bulky for the fashionable ppl that never carry anything NehNeh

hmm, cable ties bag of 50 for £1.00, about as good a deterrent as a lock and they won't freeze. But I guess you'll have to carry small sharp scissors to cut em off snowHead

Think mine's branded Abus, but it's probably exactly the same as most of the other wind-out cable locks (eg B+Q one). Cost maybe €10.
Sure it won't stop a determined thief, but might stop the clumsy idiot picking up the wrong skis, and hopefully fulfils the theft clause in the insurance that states "forcibly removed".
Might get a bike lock though.

Don't bother with a retractable lock from Lidl.

Comedy of errors.... I'd taken the wrong keys out with me for my sturdy lock at the weekend, but had the retractable lock in my pocket. Locked the bike up (was only for a few mins), but hadn't remembered to change the combination, so when I got back to it I didn't know the code! Embarassed I'd like to say a bit of brute force managed to get the lock open, but I literally snapped the cable out of the lock housing as if it wasn't there, no brute force required.

I have a retractable one with a combination. It might even be from Lidl. It works for me as I too would not wish to carry a rucksack. The little retractable fits in my salopettes pocket. Obviously, it will not stop a determined thief, but it might be enough to make said thief try another pair of skis! The main advantage is that I have no trouble carrying it.

I've had one of these for 8/9 years and they're excellent. Thicker than the combination ones I've seen and long enough to lock 2 sets of skis/poles together.
Just don't lose the keys Smile

I've got some of these: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/targus-asp0102eum-retractble-cable-3-digit-combination-travel-lock

At £2.38 each they don't have to do much to justify their purchase. I'm sure they are easy to break, but all it's about is making it easier to take someone else's skis rather than mine (and make sure no one takes them by accident).

Plus 1 for the Safeman lock, and fits in the pocket well

I actually have a lock just like that with a combination instead of a key. I found it on the ground, worked out the combination, and never used it.

After reading this thread I have now moved it next to my skis. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to steal my old battered skis, but then I never imagined anyone would steal a 10 year old pair of well used and smelly ski boots! (until someone did)

You've obviously been lucky with the safeman locks - I tried two and one after the other they just fell apart in my hands - what was worse was when you saw them apart you realised what little substance there really was inside. I'll find my ski lock thread and post it for you in a mo - there is lots of info in it about ski locks.

rogg, five feet isn't so long, it rolls up nice and small and still tucks in a pocket - I can get it around several sets of skis and we tied them all up in a big heavy bundle and then tie the bundle to an immovable object if we can find one - at the very least a thief would make one hell of a clatter if he tried for them.
