Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

2 weeks today and I'll be skiing :-)

Starting to pull things together here for skiing - 2 weeks from now and I should be on the slopes. I'm really looking forward to it. I suspect it might be the only week this year so we are going for it. I'm all set to knock midday cooking on the head and we are going to have on-slope grub at lunch (which will be a nice treat - other years we have returned for lunch). I am amazed at how much I have started to enjoy this skiing lark - there were times when I never thought I would get it, but I now really enjoy doing it.

I've got new gloves to wear and I hope my ski jacket will still fit - reminds me I'd better go and try it on - it was fine at HH in Dec, but there has been the Xmas grub since then Embarassed Wonder how many pound I can shift in two weeks!

Laughing without going mad, it would be helpful if you do some leg work - squats and lunges in particular (being careful to do the latter right, so you don't compromise your knees). And maybe a few situps when you're at it, especially crossing ones, for the obliques, or whatever they're called.

Put some good music on and go for it!

Where are you off to?

The Christmas grub is over a month ago now - no excuse. wink

Very Happy We will hopefully have arrived at our apartment 2 weeks today - very excited too. Friends we are going with coming round for dinner tonight so imagine we will do some trip planning (luckily no one else coming so we can be complete ski bores!!). My best mate already seems to be on web cam watch - I had a text at 9am this morning informing me it was snowing rolling eyes

Megamum, You're going to Austria aren't you? I think you and the Minimums will like the "on slope grub" - it's quite hearty and just the thing when you've been burning off all those calories!
Gulaschsuppe is a firm favourite with many Snowheads - usually a good helping of meat and potato in the soup and served with some bread. Another well known soup is Leberknödelsuppe (Liver dumpling soup).

Well known lunchtime main courses are:
Tiroler Gröstl, usually served with a Spiegelei (Fried Egg)
Leberkäse is usually translated as meatloaf, but I would say it is more like cooked luncheon meat. Often served with potato salad and sometimes a Spiegelei.
Schnitzel (Wiener Schnitzel is made from veal, or Schweinchnitzel made from pork) thin escalope of meat, coated in breadcrumbs and fried. Served with a slice of lemon and some salad garnish.
If you fancy some veggie alternatives then I like Spätzle a type of noodle usually cooked in cheese (Käsespätzle) or sometimes cheese and spinach (Spinatspätzle). Knödel (bread dumplings) are also often served, try Spinatknödel

As for desserts, of course Apfelstrudel needs no explanation. Kaiserschmarrn (chopped up pancakes served with a fruit compote (often apple)) is very popular, and if you are feeling particularly hungry then a Germknödel might be in order (traditionally served with melted butter, but that's too rich for me so prefer the alternative of Vanillesauce (that's custard to you and me) Laughing .

If you are looking to find particularly good value, look out for the Tagesuppe (Soup of the Day), or the Tagesmenu (Daily special menu) Toofy Grin

look out for the Tagesuppe

My aunty Dorothea, who was a bit daft, couldn't understand why, having enjoyed her first Tagessuppe, it was always different when she ordered it subsequently.

(But then she also thought Ausfahrt must be a very big place as there were so many roads leading there).
