Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zillertal Ski Area - Getting Around

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

So just looking at options for going away and am finding it hard getting info on getting around. If I go will probably stay in Mayrhofen but how easy is it to get around?

- is there a free bus?
- how quickly can I get from one area to another?
- are there any areas that you can ski between?
- is the full are pass worth while or is it better to get if for a couple of days and stick to mayrhofen for the rest of the time.

Thanks,

R.

Think all passes for 2 or more days cover the full area?

The train up/down the valley is probably best. Kaltenbach station is the one closest to ski lifts (short walk). Mayrhofen and Zell-amZiller stations are a short (free afaik) busride away. Many of the Mayrhofen hotels are right by the station.

Only real parts you can ski between are Zell am Ziller and Gerlos, and between Kaltenbach and Hochfugen.

Buses and trains all link the whole valley. Buses run to a timetable which does seem to leave a hole in the midle of the day, fine if you don't want an early finish or a late start. If you're stopping in Mayrhofen itself this won't be a problem if taking a lift out of the town. But just make sure you plan your day if heading to other resorts.
All lifts and transport are free with the lift pass.

The bus and train are both free with a lift pass. The train terminates at Mayrhofen though, so you will have to get a bus if you want to go to Hintertux. Bus and train have frequent services at the start and end of day which makes it easy to travel and get a good day's skiing in wherever you go.

Don't think you have much choice in getting anything other than a full area pass. I seem to recall if that you buy for more than three days the full pass is the only one available.

The bus and train station in Mayrhofen is at the bottom of the town as you enter it so its a good idea to stay near to it to avoid a bus or walk in the morning. Plenty of hotels nearby. I stay in the Landhaus Carla just behind the station and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Well worth catching an early bus to Gerlos, cover the two mountains and finish the day zell am Ziller and catch the train back up to Hof. That's a good days worth of skiing.

The bus ride up to the tux is well worth twenty or so minutes it takes. Given how high you'll be skiing up there I suggest going on a clear(ish) day as its cold up there. The skiing is amazing and he mountain very quiet at he top.

roscoeh, Zillertalbahn timetable here. During the day the Zillertal trains run in both directions (to/from Mayrhofen) on 30 min intervals (see red section of timetable). There are also additional bus services (see green section of timetable).

+1. We lapped some off piste up there for a morning, with only about ten people visible.

Thanks, all great info. The area pass is the only option for anything over 2 days

Just back from a week in Zillertal. We stayed in Ramsua (halfway between mayerhofn & zell am ziller) buses and trains are all free if you have ski gear on. Trains up and down the valley and so do buses. Time tables are easy to read and work out. Ski buses from Ramsua to mayrhofen takes 5mins. Ramsau to zell am ziller about 10mins.

Mayerhofn (penken, horberg, rastkogel & eggalm) can all be linked together and back ski wise (we did)

We got a bus from mayerhofn to hintertux, but coming back we got off the bus near eggalm by the rastkogelbahn and skied back over to mayerhofn and back down the horbergbahn at the end of the day as opposed to the bus all the way. So only a short 10min bus ride from the glacier as opposed to 30-40mins if you stayed on all the way to mayerhofn.

Zell am ziller to gerlos can all be skied from one to another easily. But requires a 10min bus from mayerhofn at the start of the day and at the end.

Most hotels in mayerhofn/ramsau etc have bus stops with in a 1 min walk. And the trainstations are also very close.

It's a great area and getting around is a doddle, and is not as daunting as it may 1st look. Loved the place

Also just back from this area yesterday. We stayed in Hippach which is 4km north of Mayrhofen. For us it was great as we don't want all the apres, just a nice meal - great food at Hotel Post. Very easy to get to Horberg as bus stop outside our hotel (Pension Nill) and only 5 minute ride to ski all the Mayrhofen area. Also bus to Zell about 100 m away. Did a day there but long queues to get back in the evening. Great day at Kaltenbach using the train - about 500m to station. Also went to Hintertux on train to Mayrhofen, then bus from the station. Didn't rate the glacier at all. Temperature was minus 16 and blowing a gale at the top so skiing on wind-blown ice. Red runs all wide and empty but rather boring so we skied off on the ski route and completed the day at Mayrhofen starting at Eggalm.
