With the Winter Olympics taking place in Italy early next year, what are the pros and cons about booking skiing holidays at Italian resorts over this period? I'd hate to turn up for a week's skiing only to find that most of the pistes are closed to the general public and that every restaurant is charging three times as much as normal!

Might be worth it to see and meet the stars! Wish I was there - stuck at school doing GCSEs - ugh.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Clive, most of the events are either in the Milky Way or Bardonecchia. I think there are restrictions on access between the resorts, and high accommodation prices. Even in Serre Chevalier there is a shortage of rooms during the Olympics.

well let's hope that they get some snow to start with . Sestriere should be fine, but let's hope they have adequate snowmaking in some of the other venues.

You probably wont get any accomodation anywhere near there for the olympic duration. Most of the hotels etc have been block booked for competitors etc....
Go elsewhere in italy (sella ronda - selva, canazei etc) if you want italian skiing - otherwise, just avoid the olympic weeks!!!

All:
I lived in Salt Lake City during the 2002 Olympics (and was a volunteer course crew worker for the men's Downhill and Super G at Snowbasin).
From what I heard, those skiers who were able to get accomodations in the SLC area during the Olympics found some of the least-crowded skiing in years at the non-Olympic ski areas. All the "regular" tourists were so scared off by the thought of Olympic crowds than none materialized.
If you can find a place to stay, this might be the year to ski Italy.

And a quick followup as well.
I want all you Euros to root for hometown Jackson Hole girl Resi (pronounced "Racy") Stiegler. She's on the US Team and is slated to race in the slalom and the combined.
She's got some pretty good genes - her father is former Olympic Gold and Silver medalist Pepi Stiegler from Austria.
She's the one who races slalom with tiger ears on her helmet.

Good luck, Resi.

I have holiday booked which coincides with last week of olympics... As we're doing a 2 week holiday this week - if we end up in the right part of France or Italy then it would be good to spend a day somewhere watching some races...

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Anyone racing with a set of tiger ears on their helmet deserves a little luck for such an unusual idea, so I'll add my good wishes to Resi as well

PG,
Sure, I can. We (USA) were underdogs in ski racing for so many years that all you Austrians, French, Swiss, Brits, Norwegians, Swedes, Croats etc ought to be salivating for a nice, cute, young American girl to root for.
I'll be counting on all of you to have tiger ears on your helmets this winter to show your support.
Bob
P.S. She actually is pretty darn good. I believe she was sixth in the slalom in last year's World Championships, when she was only 18 and in her first full year on the World Cup.

I am afraid I would find it impossible to support anyone with names like 'Racy' , 'Peek-a-Boo',
Davis Love the Third etc.
Tiger Ears and outfits that include plus fours and the colours of American football teams are also beyond the pale.
Whatever happened to proper Christian names and sensible dress codes ?
