Poster: A snowHead

I am 48 years old, have skiied for 40 years. I am an all mountain cruiser/expert. I am 6'1", 240 lbs. I need new skiis and boots.
Any recommendations for skiis and boots? Price not an issue. How about length, 170 or 180?
Thanks

spinesurgery,
Welcome,
nice name...!! On-piste, off-piste..? I am thinking all-mountain cruiser means red and blacks, need a ski for NE boiler-plate..?
You could pick a model and use the search facilty, there are a lot of opinions and some people carry 2 or 3 sets, horses for courses, that sort of thing. Not sure who has been on 2006 skis yet but Volkls, Atomic Metrons etc all have their fans

On piste, poo-poo man, I'm 48 years old. Have to admit though that I fractured my wrist in the Super Pipe at Loon Mtn. last year. Big time reconstructive surgery, Ouch!!
I ski mostly Blacks, need NE boilerplate...... Any useful suggestions

spinesurgery,
I haven't skied NE but am used to icy European pistes and if these are the conditions of the day and a predomiantely on-piste ski is required I would be looking at
Rossi 9s... a quick turning slaom ski...lots of fun on icy pistes.
Elan SLX...rated better than the rossi 9s by many over here...no mean performer then on hard pack..
Stockli Lasers...I have tried the XL as an all-rounder and this is more a specialist piste ski so I would give that a go as this sompany know what they doing IMO.
In the absense of posters at this time, try the Atomic metrons and the Fisher RX8. Not skied them myself but they will be touted on here.
Type the models above in the search facility , top left of this page and see what you get

spinesurgery, what skis and boots are you using now?

Boots - Technica, now about 4 years old, new liners once. Skis- Atomic SX-11's great at speed and on hardpack but short on forgiveness and versalitility. Have only heard good things about Atomic Metron B5's. Thoughts?

spinesurgery, Weclome to
Boots: get whatever fits you best! Decide this with the help of a quality bootfitter.
Finding such is a bit of a problem, if you are around London i advise "profeet". If you can bear to wait until you are in resort then find the best person in your resort to do the fitting.
The problem with buying in resort is probably a morning missed skiing, the benefit is you can go back to have any problems dealt with through the week.

spinesurgery, so, perhaps a few bumps and perhaps some broken fluff, perhaps some gullies over at Wildcat? but you'd like to keep the edgehold of those SX11s on hardpack, is that it?

Yes exactly, Comprex!!! What would you suggest? Thinking about Atomic Metron B5's

spinesurgery, your first post has an implicit description of your style that actually corresponds to a marketing category: "all mountain cruiser/expert" I'm leery of marketing categories, so perhaps you'll allow me to ask whether you see yourself as carving through a bump field or using something more like a Pro Mogul Tour head-on athletic attack? Another way to pose that question is whether you expect to use high edge angles just as in hardpack carving, or more of an upright stance?
Your description of the SX11 is somewhat of a lead, I would just like it clearer.

spinesurgery, you're on the east coast and from my (very) limited experience almost all the ski stations have test centres?
Unless "money no object" means you don't care about buying a pair quickly and discarding if you don't like them (in which case, please cut out the middle man, buy some 185cm WC Rossi 9X and send them to me, you'll never know the difference...) then here's a thought.
Boots can be bought by trying on lot sof pairs in shop with a good fitter. Over in the UK the big chains will give a comfort guarantee. You might find the same over there. I'm sure someone here can make a robust recommendation for a bootfitter near you.
Skis are both easier and harder (!). If I were you - and assuming you have the time... Go up early season and spend a day or two trying on as many skis as you can in as varied conditions as you can. Try and work out a shortlist of 2 or 3 - don't try and make a decision there and then (unless it's obvious).
Go back a week later or so (Mt. Snow isn't far away now is it?). Now try the 2,3 or 4 pairs again, again under varied conditions.
Go to the nearest bar and drink fine Vermont ale until you've made a decision - and buy both pairs if you have to.

I spotted a pair of last season's WC 9X in the Chertsey Snow & Rock sale. I think they are 50% off. Not sure what size they were, but at a guess I would say around 179 or 185.

I question your ability. Surely if you were an expert you would be able to answer the question yourself.

spinesurgery, this is actually something I've been puzzling over for myself as well. The candidates thus far:
Option A (direct attack):
Stockli Stormriders
Volkl Allstar
Metron M10
Option B(carve 'em- I have not tried these skis):
Volkl AC3
Metron B5
Metron XI
Fischer AC76
Nordica Top Fuel.

FastCarver,
It isn't about my ability, it's about how there are so many skiis out there that I thought I might get the impression of some other folks who may have tried some of them. Surely you understand that it would be impossible to try them all to make a decision. It's absurd to think that an just because someone is an "expert" that they would know every ski on the market. Don't be a buzzkill

comprex,
Thanks for your input. Very helpful. Your list includes some I am considering as well. I'm leaning towards the Metrons. Good luck this season.

comprex,
BTW, I would suggest never taking an SX-11 in the bumps. I bent the tip at the shovel. In general I don't ski the bumps anymore. Just want someting that can handle hardpack and crud. Not that I'm asking much. Perhaps I will have to just have 2 skiis in my "quiver"

spinesurgery, yeouwch. Bent tip in bumps? That's not a good recommendation is it. Then again I had to replace my Rossi 9Xs after breaking one in half going into a rock that looked like a bump.
