"Would you like small or large radius skis?"
I've no idea how to answer that question in a ski shop. What should I bear in mind?

Off piste - large.
On piste - small.
Standard exceptions and reservations apply

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Why? I have both, SL and GS skis, and to be honest, I pick GS skis with their >27m radius (its 29m to exact) anytime over SL with their around 12m radius. So there's no rules with that. Another this is, that skiing for all day with SL skis is not an option for me. 2-3h is fine, but for more they are way too much.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

primoz, that's more or less what my L2 trainer said. Long radius is less tiring for day after day. You can make a long radius ski turn quicker if you want but it's harder the other way.
offpisteskiing suggests about 20m+ for touring. Aparently, any less and the middle has a habbit of sinking into the snow whilst the ends stay on the surface. This can make for interesting skiing - especially on breakable crust.
I've not ridden enough skis to be aware of all of this myself - but I do take in what people tell me!

Yep, always best to ask for all-mountain skis. As primoz and altis say - short radius skis are fun for a while but get very hard work after a short while.

Fun factor on piste, stability off piste. Not many people would need a gs over an sl on piste.

Do you want to make large turns or small turns? Do you want to ski mostly on or off-piste?
My usual piste skis are 12m radius slalom skis, GS radius skis means GS race speeds which is way to much for anything but an almost empty piste.

If I knew the answer to that then I'd know what sort of skis to ask for!
What are GS and SL??

For most people who rent skis I'd suggest the answer is small - successive short radius turns with long traverses between them aren't GS turns.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Personally I prefer skis around the 20-25m mark, which is probably med/large radius. SL's are a giggle for a while, wouldn't want them everyday though.

Mine are 18m I think - somewhere mid range is probably about right for most people? People only seem to be talking about ~12m or 20m-plus here, there's plenty of skis in the late-teens, surely that's where most people should go?
