Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Land Rover Ski Rack

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Not strictly speaking a kit query but wasn't quite sure where to post this.

Does anyone know where I can get a ski rack for the back of a Land Rover 110 Defender? I'm after one that attaches to the back of the vehicle and can be swung out of the way to open the back door (if you see what I mean...).

Seen some that attach to the spare wheel mountings on the back door but I can see a few problems with that.

Very grateful for any ideas.

Somebody mention Land Rovers?

First a question, is your spare wheel mounted directly to your backdoor, or is it on a swing away carrier?
If it's on the back door you can only use a rack that attaches to the spare wheel. If it's on a swing away, you'd use the same wheel mount rack, but obviously the wheel and ski rack would swing. It's far better to have swing away carrier, as the weight of the wheel kills the hinges. There are twin spare wheel swing aways available, so you could with a bit of enginuity have a ski rack and spare wheel sise by side on the same swing away.
I"ll post details of the rack when I get home.

Spyderman, grand, thanks.

Have a door mounted spare at the mo but would be prepared to start again to get the best set-up. Probably being dense but would that mean a new back door too?

I'm just in the process of sorting this exact same issue!!

Stage 1 is to get the swing away spare wheel mount (Paddocks)...

stage 2 is to get one made by a local frabicant which will carry 12 pairs of skis!!

Not neccessarily, you'll probably have noticed Landys running around with a square of chequerplate on the back door. To remove the rear door carrier, remove internal trim panel, undo 4 bolts, hey presto, wheel carrier removed, but your left with holes in the back door, cover with square of chequerplate, rivet into position, with bead of silicone also to stop water ingress, or buy new door.
If buying from Paddocks, check but it's worth having a carrier that swings with the back door, or you"ll have to swing the carrier before you can open the door. Watch out, sometimes Paddocks can be a bit price rather than quality.

I've nto had it made yet...got the spare wheel carrier which I'll probably fit this week (fingers crossed), I've drawn the carrier and am looking for the fabricant I think there's a few in Sallanche that can do it....

Will be interested to hear how it goes. I'm going to get on the case and see what I can find out from another Les Gets operator ("Mr Ski") who I think may have had bespoke racks put onto two Landys out in resort. There may be a business in this - and probably one with better margins than flogging holidays!

Here's the info on swing away spare wheel mounts: I'd recommend Mantec or BOAB. If Paddocks go for the one that opens with the back door.

Rear wheel ski carriers: Fabbri Gringo are the best, Thule is pretty good too:

marcellus, Sounds like you need one of those Box arrangements that are fitted to the back of coaches in the alps, or fit 2 large ski boxes on the roof and have a rear ladder. Kiwi1 posted details of a German ski box manufacturer that makes mahusive ski boxes.

That's my fall back option, although the landie with roof rack wouldn't fit in the Garage!!

ctskifam, Ever thought about bonnet mounted racks, easy to load skis onto and if it is just running around the resort no real problems, I've seen them diagonally mounted but with todays shorter skis I'm sure thwart ship mounting would be ok. Have a friend who bought magnetic mount racks for his Range Rover rolling eyes

Hadn't thought of that. Someone has also told me that you can get racks fitted on the side of the Landy. I can see my drivers scraping those down the side of many a parked vehicle though...

OK had a slight rethink!!

Fitted the spare wheel carrier from Paddocks (only £99 and is really solid) bit of a bug to fit as the old bolts were a tad corroded but fortunately had an angle grinder so they cam off then there was the reinforcing plate which th MOD had kindly fitted with the standard wheel bracket.....................armour plating!! cur titanium drill bits very slow!!

SO then spoke to several fabricants about the rack.............................................€1,500....................so spoke to a Landie specialist in Sallanche (guy called Rashid) row of what look like brit owned chalet landies lined up outside and he recommended a ski rack that fits to the spare wheel...made for 6 pairs of skis but says you can bungy more if need be or just lay them flat on the floor in the back...only cost €209 (euros)

yes that's the one........the swing out carrier is attached to the dorr so the door can be opened from the inside......rashid did say that he would always use the swing out carrier as the weight is too heavy for the door otherwise

Just bought a landy myself and looking for a rear-mounted box for skis/boards. Got quoted about 700€ from Cuccinotta, but anyone know any other options? Cuccinotta one looks a bit small.

coach bolts and some rubber washers should do the trick if its a old Laddy then just drill through the roof, any old roof box will do wink wink wink if its long enough?

Just a slight thread drift......

Is it possible, or rather practicable, to put a swing out spare wheel carrier on a Scooby Forester to make room for an LPG tank in the wheel well?

The one I had on the back of my 110 carried 8pairs of skis

I think to carry more skis then you would need to modify it, it's now in my shed and never to be used again as the Landie has gone so if anyone wants it to use as a donor then let me know.

My advice Very Happy

1) Sell the land rover and get a proper japanese 4wd that can handle the weight on the back door without it falling apart and breaking down

2) Why not just put the spare wheel for the scooby on the roof?
